Watercolours =D

So, I got some art supplies, and over the last two nights I have been trying them out.



This one I googled an image and used it as a reference. It is here, and it totally awesome and blows mine away. Anywho...



This is the one I did tonight. I am proud of the wings =O not so much the rest of it ^^; I took the wing design off a picture of a butterfly. Because it was a real butterfly, I do not feel the need to give it credit. It was born that way.

That wolf looks great! I love the scratch over his eye, and his coloring.
My favorite thing about the wolf is how real he looks, but still has that slight fantasy to him, or at least that's how I see it.


And the wings on that second picture are absolutely stunning! Blue and black always go so well together, no matter what it is.

You've got a good eye!

Start playing around with the contrast, here. What kind of watercolors are they? It looks like you used some kind of pencil on the wolf near the bottom (?). I think the roughness is nice, but it distracts from the quality of the piece. If you bump up the contrast and turn up the intensity on his eyes (you look a little tentative here) it won't matter as much. A darker background overall might make this pop.

Also, for a little more specifics, I think you should darken the ear that's farthest away from us. The way you have the light situated, it's distractingly and unrealistically light, I would say. And the muzzle might be a tad too broad. But everything looks to be in the right place, so we're just talking minor tweaking. Did you sketch before you started?

For the "dragon"fly, you have a very good sense of anatomy. But I can bet you're drawing too small! It looks to me like you ran out of the ability to put in any details, so either you need smaller implements (is this watercolor too?), or you should make it bigger. The concept is great, and I especially like the tail! Nice work!

Nutty! How dare you think the original is better than yours. This wolf is awesome. You have a wonderful eye here and the proportion is great. The background added a sense of fantasy to the picture that made it way cooler still.

And the colors in the second one are really cool. The execution still very detailed and it has this modern feel, but the idea seems weird. The soft of the butterfly wing seems odd against the slick, reptile feel of the dragon/lizard/thing that they’re attached too.

But they still look awesome, Nutty and I luff them!

Amber- Thanks! I can't take credit for the blue and the black. I stole them from a real butterfly =o

Shepherd- Funny you should say that- they're water colour pencils. I love them, they are almost like cheating. ^^ I bought oil paints today, however, so I will actually be painting too. I could feasibly get rid of the rough pencil at the bottom- all it needs is water and some patience. =o thanks for the tip on the ear- I can see that now. Not sure what I can do about the broad muzzle =/ and will have to look at recolouring the eye.

The dragon is also watercolour- I was trying out smooth blending after all the texture in the wolf. But you're right- I draw too small. I think that's why I love ink pens so much @_@ something I must work on D= Thanks for your pointers!

Lilymoore- Thank you ^^ I wasn't sure what to do with the background, I just knew that grey on white doesn't really make a big impact unless you do something really great with it. So I got rid of the white. >.>

And the idea itself isn't really mine- there are a few 'fairy dragons' or 'faerie dragons' lurking around. they are not usually my favourite type of dragon, but I felt like drawing something with a bold pattern =D I can see what you're saying, though- I should possibly try and add some texture to the dragon's body to break him up a little. he's looking a little too sleek =o

Hey, Nutty! Nice artwork.
Okay, so for the first picture, I think it's pretty nice. The wolf is well proportioned and drawn, and I have just a few nitpicks:
1.) The hair. It doesn't look real enough to me. Too pencil-y.
2.) The pupil of the eye is at the top of, well, the eye. It makes it look odd. o.O
3.) The ears sort of seem weird to me...like they look sort of different from each other. >.>
4.) I think you should have colored the whole background in, my friend. It makes it look sort of messy like this.
But still, it's a very nice picture.
I think the second picture is actually very cool. Sort of like a fantasy type drawing; the wings are brilliant, by the way. This is very creative. Nice "dragon"fly.

I really liked the colors, on both of them. I have trouble using the webcam to photograph my artwork too... But I have one suggestion; the scar on the eye of the wolf seemed unreal and was to "sharp" to me. Or, uh, too perfect, you could say. If you could change the color to a duller red, it would've seemed more realistic. I don't know, this is just me...

Hey there Nutty!

#1 - I love the coloured and layered textures of the background here, it's very artistic in a textile sense which makes it your own! As well as the impressionist feel of where the wolf's body has dissapeared to and I think that touch of surrealism might even make it a better picture than it's reference! Though I would say, the scar on the eye seems a little to brightly coloured and I think a tone down in it with a grey washover using a thin paintbrush should tidy that up a bit, but make it quite watery. In terms of the features of the wolf, well, they're excellent aren't they? I love how you've lined his (assuming it's a "he" for the time being) fur off with the black watercolour, it's very appealing!

#2 - I prefer this one! The colours here stand out to me more than anything with the wings appearing incredibly elegant, natural and, inevitably, quite beautiful. Perhaps if you tidied up the features on the head and the far back foot a bit, the image might look overall more surreal and appealing. I tell you what would make this picture stunning though, Nutty! A background! What I'd suggest is something natural that could either heavily contradict the beauty; such as a brown dead natural landscape, slightly blurred in comparison with a yellowy kind of sky... or! A vivid coloured floral, very green leafy land scape which shows the beauty in all it's wonder.
