The three houses in the south end of the village were a bit of a mystery to the citizens of Bringhamville. Nobody could recall anyone living there, not even the oldest woman in the village. And the one part of her that did work well was her memory. No one ever dared get too close to the houses, beautiful as they were, making perfect homes for young families.

The one thing everyone was certain about the houses was that they were haunted. Sometimes lads who went out hunting with their hounds could see strange lights floating around the houses that were too big to be lightning bugs. When a child wandered too close, it was likely to get a good kick in the pants from something that wasn't there. And when young lovers wanted some privacy, and they mistakenly went to close to the houses, they could hear singing and laughter. The songs were in a language that none who heard it could understand. It sounded like Gaelic of Welsh, but there was no doubt it was something different. And the voices who sang them had a strange pitch to them, like they were not quite human.
Please, sit down before you fall down.
Belloq, "Raiders of the Lost Ark"

Even though the story about the 3 houses was a common one, not all newcomers were told. The townsfolk believed that the houses were haunted for a reason. Something was in there wanting to keep others out, there had to be a reason so the townsfolk decided that they would not disturb the spirit's living in the house. This was a bad choice because there was a newcomer in town named Mr. Hikernickle that was intent on buying the 3 houses.
