James felt his head pounding. Even when the music cut and the lights of the mansion went out, his ears were ringing. All he could hear was a constant, wavering pitch buzzing in his ears like a siren, warning him that he was going just a little more deaf than he was before.
His eyes barely had a chance to adjust to the sudden change in lighting before he found himself tumbling towards the pool.
It felt like someone pushed him hard, barreling into him so he’d go flying into the water.
And he did - go flying into the water, that is.
He fell in face-first, with the cape-like coverup catching water behind him like a parachute. It didn’t quite break his fall, though. It just made him heavier, and he feared of getting tangled in it for the split second that he couldn’t breathe.
A creeping panic started to seep in, and he inhaled some of the disgusting pool water before sputtering up to the surface, wiping his hair and water out of his eyes.
