For 200 years, the witches and magicians of Riftmark were hunted down and burned at the stake. Anyone suspected of being a witch- outspoken women, herbalists, midwives, and even vagrants- were hunted down by the Inquitsition. People soon grew restless and weary of the witch-burning, and the Inquisition, a collection of witch hunters and nobles, was finally overthrown after five years of chaotic revolution.
Now, the future of Riftmark lies in uncertainty. The royal family, as far as is known, was slaughtered at the hands of a mob towards the end of the Revolution, and the Chief Inquisitor, Malcolm Everglynn, was burned at the stake. His daughter and heir, Phoenix Everglynn, still lives, though no one knows where. Many people search for her, since a bounty of a thousand gold pieces has been placed on her head. Also left behind was the man who trained the inductees, Lord Quinn Aurelius. He served as an advisor and confidante to the Everglynns, but now seeks power for himself. His agenda is to overthrow the witch leadership and bring back the witch hunts.
With no leadership and no laws, the wronged witches, and even the common peoples, started hunting down the witch hunters for revenge. Masses of people sweep the countryside, gruesomely butchering anyone they find. In the cities, there are whispers of witches for hire that will hunt down the hunters for a pretty penny. Nobles and wealthy merchants have aligned themselves with the witches, for the time being, seeing no other way out of certain death. From the ranks of the magic-users rose Darius and Rhiannon Asterion, twin brother and sister. They are rumoured to be exceptionally powerful, and command a large group of magic-users known as the Remnant.
The nobles, of course, will not let themselves be forgotten. Many have raised small armies of their own, commanded by themselves. From deep in the Angardian Mountains, Lady Celia Thornhart leads a small contingent force towards the capitol city, Dwinhyr. Meanwhile, Lords Cyrus and Finn Gwythall have amassed a force made up of assassins, thieves, and other slum-dwellers, whom they command from their home in the southern deserts. They do not ride for Dwinhyr, but bide their time and collect information, waiting for the right time to strike.
