I. sounds from the walls

sometimes i hear whispers from deep within the floorboards
i know i should ignore them, but they intrigue me
it's almost like you're here with me again
yet i've all but lost my passion
so our reunion
would be
bitter

sometimes i hear echoes of the past, from tenants and landlords
who have lived upon this wretched home, you see?
it's almost like they've trapped me in this pen
and kept me in a cage-like fashion
now our reunion
will be
cramped

sometimes i hear sounds from the walls, they often sound like angry hordes
or armies of men who'd like to rid this world of the likes of me
i'd much sooner walk straight into a lion's den
and offer myself to be reduced to rations
so that our reunion
could be
free

II. falling bird

feathers falling, flowing down
winds watching wings writhe and wither
squalls scratch and slice all around
while the world waits to wrap its claws about

a fallen bird’s corpse.
they told me to never give up on my dreams.

so i took another nap

III. fleeting summer daydream

it’s very often i remember
those silly daydreams from summers past
(if i daydream about daydreams,
is it a dream or a flashback?)

the windowsill is covered in a layer of dust
but it’s very often i sit and stare
and think about what it was like to share
that layer of dust with someone else
(if i ramble about such unimportant thoughts,
am i a madman in your eyes?)

my head, i noticed, is now filled with thoughts of you
perhaps more than before you forgot about me
i’ve never said it aloud, but i’d turn back time
even if it would make you cry so that i won’t cry
maybe if i try hard enough,
those buried memories could return in their former glory,
rather than remain as a fleeting summer daydream
(if i waste all my life thinking about you,
does that mean i’m in love?)
they told me to never give up on my dreams.

so i took another nap

Spoiler! :
The visual structure of "Sounds from the Walls" is so strong, and I love how it plays into the idea of being trapped or cornered!
"I've got dreams like you--no really!--just much less, touchy-feeley.
They mainly happen somewhere warm and sunny
on an island that I own, tanned and rested and alone
surrounded by enormous piles of money." -Flynn Rider, Tangled

IV. meaningless questions

why must the flowers grow, only to spread their seed
and scatter their petals like litter across the turf?
is their only purpose the curse of propagation?
or do the flowers hope for something more?

when my pen runs out of ink and i toss it in the trash,
does it look at me in anguish, and beg for mercy?
i wonder then, if the pen requires a proper burial
or perhaps it only wants a final farewell

does a strong, sturdy house wish it were something greater
each time a family comes and goes through its halls?
i often wish to ask a house what it’s like:
to be a foundation, to be depended on

but perhaps the question i was asking all along,
was if these questions made me seem like
i know which direction my legs will lead me.
yet all i see are the petals scattered across the lawn–

–slowly withering away into dust.
they told me to never give up on my dreams.

so i took another nap

V. the boy at the bench

if tears are the frustration of the mind
then is nostalgia the frustration of the soul?
could the musings of a boy at a bench
be more than just part of the whole?

if the boy at the bench says he wishes to sing
he could write a whole poem of rhymes, in time
but he hears that true poetry needs not be
hindered by rules and regulations,
so he writes a line that goes on and on and on until he realizes he’s gone too far . . .

and the stanza, too, is one line too long,
but that is how he intended it to be.
And perhaps his “thoughtful” lack of grammar,
Was nothing more than a habit he picked up,
From poets more thoughtful than he.

Who is the Boy at the Bench, then,
If he is merely a collection of plagiarized ideas?
As he sheds tears on a stage before a sympathetic crowd,
Does he truly think they believe his lies?

but what is a lie really, if not a truth that only few will know
perhaps the boy at the bench would understand
if he could tell his deception from his engineered reality.

and perhaps the thoughtful first two lines
of his thoughtful, wonderful poem
is just nonsense generated from the boy’s subconscious
to keep his reader attached

so the boy returns to his home
and he writes another poem
he’s really quite satisfied with himself,
for no one will truly know him.
they told me to never give up on my dreams.

so i took another nap

VI. of 88 keys, icarus

Synesthesia:
a perceptual phenomenon in which
stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway
leads to automatic, involuntary experiences
in a second sensory or cognitive pathway

(i hear the twinkling piano keys)
(c-sharp, c-sharp, then repeat)
(back and forth my fingers roll)
(the sound glistens; indiscreet)

(a tapestry of glittering stars)
(within my mind, beneath my fingers,)
(filling the room, filling the hole)
(made by my heart, pain still lingers)

(so i sparkle and brightly gleam)
(to forget the darkness all around)
(glitter spreads about the room)
(surpassing all the shimmering sound)

(i finish the piece with finesse and grace)
(finale: the ground falls up to my face.)

Flicker Vertigo:
an imbalance in brain-cell activity
caused by exposure to low-frequency flickering
of a relatively bright light.

they told me to never give up on my dreams.

so i took another nap

There was nothing he enjoyed more than a good book. He'd wander into the study, take down some leather-bound volume, and eat it.
