the last few seconds
fell on me like smudges from
a girls fingers

she clasps
the back of her dress closed
& the reflection in the mirror quivers
in sync with me

i kick her foot
under the table & hold her hand
only when no one is looking

her mother asks if
we are wearing the same lipstick
i wont scrape myself on a washboard
to come across clean

the feel of dappled sunlight
& the sound of that windchime
my mom wont throw away,
crisp lake water
in a northern winter

you, dancing with me
to frank sinatra in the kitchen,
candlelit & tugging at my dimples
but only when
no one else was home

i replace lyrics with your name
over & over

of crystals or the position

sixteen / my childhood home / some lover carved into a dogwood tree stump / limbs tangled together on the couch / limbs tangled together on my bed / cracks in the wall & the other spaces i dont fit anymore / the scale in the bathroom / anywhere i have had a body, even once / all of the closure i have never gotten / my grandmothers urn / womanhood bastardized / every symbol of what is to come

the sky submerged
in the perfect shade of pink

every day there are birds & beetles
& bodies off of buildings

the printer paper again

a group waits for the crosswalk
to start talking & the capillaries to break

i stand here, a place-marker

my body wont wade under the bridge;

morning bites at my cheeks,

to sleepy history class
