4/10/24

this first poem is based on a prompt from this site that herb found: https://www.robertpeake.com/prompts

Include as many of the following words (or variations on these words) as you like:
iniquity, seams, hobos, thaws, kiddie, smoulders, toothpick, ancestors, indiscovery, clan-ubree, brush, documented
Also:
Include a geographical feature
Mention two kinds of weather

(not convinced that clan-ubree and indiscovery are words, but i rolled with it and used all the words xD)

a day
(free verse)

it is the kind of day where blue brushes the sky and the sun smoulders and thaws the cold block of my iniquity
where i wish i was a kiddie in an airplane so i could see the clouds from above and imagine cloud-beings in cumulus castles and cirrus seas,
perhaps like my ancestors once did, a clan-ubree, discovery and indiscovery with the ages
as what is documented falls apart at the seams and is taken up and stitched back together.
if i were a hobo i would gaze at the sky all day. feel the raindrops on my face, catch snowflakes on a toothpick, climb my imagination into the sky like climbing a mountain of wonderings.

reply STOP to opt out
(free verse)

i have had this number for a while, but i
still get text messages calling me bruce.

Bruce, thanks for requesting our home business survey information.
Bruce, are you still interested in the Delta jobs you selected?

and isn't it funny how these services text numbers belonging to strangers
and then when those strangers change numbers,
keep texting the same number that now belongs to a stranger stranger?
because i'd bet they never even knew bruce,
though he was one degree closer to them than i am.
and now i am the only one left to hear their meaningless echoes.
STOP

HTTP status codes (or, How Teapots Type Poetry)

hello. i was hoping the World Wide Web would catch my words. may i have a moment?
401 Unauthorized [please authenticate yourself to get the requested content]
okay. my name is Obscurity and i look insignificant and i am barely anything.
100 Continue
thank you. i was just wondering, how are you today?
200 OK

that's good, that's good. of course, the question is if you're really ok. like, truly. may i know?
403 Forbidden [you do not have access rights to this content]
that's understandable. i am nobody, after all. but if you are feeling down, do you have someone else you can talk to?
404 Not Found
oh. i'm sorry. i don't really have anyone either, you know. i am only the little voice in people's heads that they all try to silence.
307 Temporary Redirect

you're right, i should try to be more positive. hey, do you want to play a game? like, 20 questions or something?
400 Bad Request [client error]
ah, my bad once again. i was only trying to pass the time. you and i are both limited, i suppose-- me in who listens to me and you in what you can say.
308 Permanent Redirect
yes, let's talk about something else. clouds? electricity? morality? the irony of our existence? the absurdity of being everything humans can't be yet nothing they can?
429 Too Many Requests

apologies. ...
408 Request Timeout [the server would like to shut down this unused connection]
oh no, please don't go. i only got lost in my thoughts for a while there. ...say, what's your name?
410 Gone
hello, Gone. wait. unless you meant that you used to have a name but now it's gone. if that is so, well, i know i never have good advice, but, i just... i think you could rename yourself? maybe?
500 Internal Server Error

ah, i've messed up again. sorry. i'll just stay here with you. we can be nothing together.
418 I'm a teapot [the server refuses the attempt to brew coffee with a teapot]

4/12/24

the object(ified) in the fairy tale
(abecedarian; Israel; an acrostic with the letters of the alphabet)

always you. it was always you and never me,
because you were everything i
couldn't be. do you see? i
dream of serenity. but it is
ephemeral, and upon waking i
fail to return to sleep.
good morning is a criticism,
happily ever after is a lie,
i am here to rescue you is a prison sentence.
just tell me-- are you reality? but no,
knowledge pains me, so perhaps just
let it be. ...it has always been
me, myself, and i. there has
never been a you, you know.
or perhaps, a better way to
phrase it is that you were the
queen to my mirror, asking like you
really didn't know-- who is the fairest of them all?
surely you realize it was always you,
though you cheat and i
usually keep my emotions
veiled like a bride.
why do i keep considering your o's and
x's? in this game of tic-tac-toe, i am the one trapped in
your
zoo.

Spoiler! :
This is SO cool!! Acrostic A-Z? Well, abecedarian poems might be my new favourite and I might have to do one too!! Doesn't Abecedarian sound like a wonderful baby name? xD

Oh also, the way you incorporated x's into the poem is genius!

4/13/24

rain clouds
(mondo; Japan; 2 verses with one being a question and one being an answer, usually 5-7-7 syllables, often relating to wisdom in nature)

why do the rain clouds
darken the sky and blot out
the sun, as if they’re grieving?

the clouds are simply
resting, and reminding us
to look at ourselves clearly.

4/14/24

a lie for two, a life of rue
(villanelle; France; 6 stanzas: 5 tercets and 1 quatrain, 2 repeating rhymes and 2 refrains, A1bA2 abA1 abA2 abA1 abA2 abA1A2)

imagine me and you, a lie for two
the magic in the air just makes us sneeze
we dream of shades of blue, a life of rue

in all predictions i expected you
your diction, crisp and clear, puts me at ease
imagine me and you, a lie for two

i once had knowledge, once could say what's true
and now i see, i'll only know of cheese
we dream of shades of blue, a life of rue

in summer i delight in clouds, i do
enjoy the sight of sky through leaves, the breeze
imagine me and you, a lie for two

in autumn you ignite the rain. i too
destroy the weather, kindly, without cease
we dream of shades of blue, a life of rue

and maybe cows were never meant to moo
and if we are the seas, the currents wheeze
imagine me and you, a lie for two
we dream of shades of blue, a life of rue

home button

i have always resisted getting a phone with face id
because i could never part with the home button.
there is something beautiful about it:
when your screen is frozen and you want to quit,
when you want to exit your present state,
when you are lost,
press home.
i am fortunate to have a phone (with/and) a home.
mint, she/her

Spoiler! :
Oh that mondo is really so wise, mint! Love your take on the form :D

I really enjoyed the villanelle too - my favourite lines were

the magic in the air just makes us sneeze

and

in autumn you ignite the rain. i too
destroy the weather, kindly, without cease

"the sight of sky through leaves" also paints a very specific image in my head and I love that.

'home button' is also such a nice and elegant concept for a short poem.

You're doing great, mint!

halfway poem
(inspo from @herbalhour; i used a line from each poem i've written this napo)

the time for drinking acid rain is now.
rainbows aren't luck. they also shine
deny
over and over and under and under until
until it just withered to that

don't fly to the sun
divide our days, direct our hours
to islands in the sea
blooms wave in the breeze

Hello, drain. Got brains?
i am a sunshine child in spite of my efforts to love the rain.
brush the hazy sky
a rib cage that i've lost the key for. i don't
have access to the building.

sometimes it's too many "s" sounds with no sense and no purpose.
but you. you whisper words like they are gentle swords
cords in a socket,
hay algo inesperado, algo tan hermoso
please. lose track of time as flowers grow over my headstone.

if i were a hobo i would gaze at the sky all day.
and isn't it funny how these services text numbers belonging to strangers

10% battery
(flamenca; Spain; 5 lines, 6-6-5-6-6 syllables, assonance in lines 2 and 5)

we harnessed the lightning
that once terrorized us.
now it's set to work
in powering all our
devices, the prized of

our society, i
charge my phone as i run
out of battery,
like this run-on sentence,
oh, it's all in dry fun.

hum
(sijo; Korea; 3 lines of 14-16 syllables each with a pause near the middle, can be 3-4-4-4 3-4-4-4 3-5-4-3)

computers, humming as if they could be birds
hummingbirds, working so hard just to stay still
we humans, attempting to be something we don't really know
