Pel hesitated, then nodded and flipped to the next card. If Tempest Briar was energetic enough to curse, maybe she could last for a few more. Pel tried to read as slowly as possible. “When was the first colony founded on Mars?”

Pel might have been imagining it, but the experimenter had started to look vaguely annoyed. He grasped the lever and dragged it downwards, millimeter by millimeter.
Tempest Briar blinked. “How are we on-“ Then the shocks came. Oh. Oh. She writhed in the chair, crying out in pain. When it stopped, he slumped forward, his head lulling to his chest. A headache flared to life in his temples.

Pel stiffened as soon as he heard Tempest Briar cry out. "Hey-- hey, are you okay?" Pel released the lever and backed away, as if he could undo what he'd just done.
She blinked slowly. He needed to… needed to…. He lifted his head again. Where was Pel? “Pel…?” Her words were starting to slur. “We need… something… something’s wrong.”

Pel immediately lurched towards the door into the room, but the experimenter raised an arm to block him. "If you leave now, you'll have earned less than an hour of experimentation."
"Please," Pel said, biting his lip, "I just-- can't-- can't you let me see him?" He ducked under the experimenter's arm. This had been a terrible idea. If Tempest Briar died-- no, Pel couldn't bear to think of that.
