"Nice. That sounds like a great time." Meyer nodded, following them in with Sadie in tow. They both hesitated, waiting to be told where to sit. "It's great bonding time. Sadie and I love hiking together."

"Where's your favorite place to hike?" Martin and Mary sat down on one side of the table, and Nicholas took the head.
"I’m thinking about the aurora borealis. You can’t tell if it really does exist or if it just looks like existing. All things are so very uncertain, and that’s exactly what makes me feel reassured." --Too-Ticky
Meyer sat down opposite Martin and Sadie sat across from Mary.
"Mm..." Meyer thought for a moment. "I liked New River Gorge."
Sadie scoffed, rolling her eyes. It was clear this had been an ongoing thing between them.
He chuckled, glancing back at the others. "That was a little steep for Sadie's liking."
"I like easier paths," she confirmed. "Don't have a specific one, really. I like the local parks. The, like, two, three mile loops."

"Amen." Mary nodded. "Steep stuff is just unnecessary self punishment, seriously." "But it's fun to push yourself!" Martin protested.

"You too?" Mary asked in amusement. Nicholas was waiting to say grace and glanced between them; he could see Martin had his hands clasped in his lap but Mary seemed to be disregarding the tradition completely.

"Alas," Sadie agreed with a nod of her head and a small smile. She glanced around the table, sobering when she saw Nicholas looking pissy. "Oh. Sorry." She closed her eyes and bowed her head out of respect for him. Meyer glanced between them and then looked down at the table, not closing his eyes but still taking a respectful posture. Neither of them believed in all this stuff, but it seemed polite.

Nicholas bowed his head and rested his hands in his lap. "'Come, Lord Jesus, be our Guest, and let these gifts to us be blessed.' Amen." "Amen," Mary and Martin echoed. Nicholas raised his head, and Martin set about passing the bowl down. "It's a bummer," Mary went on. "I'd like to be able to do more things but it's exercise induced for me--can't bike too hard, can't go for walks in the heat, can't do any of that stuff."

Sadie had offered the tiniest 'amen' as well, but was grateful Mary picked the conversation back up. "Me, too. Thankfully Meyer's infinitely patient--" He shrugged it off. "And we just take it super slow. But it's frustrating for sure to be limited by it."

"I wish there were those baby slings but for adults," he said wistfully. "It'd be nice to just kick back and not worry about getting out of breath but still be able to enjoy people's company." "Zipline," Martin suggested, and Mary wrinkled her nose.

"Oh, those are a blast!" Sadie said eagerly. "You can fly on those bad boys!"

"Nope nope nope." Mary shook her head rapidly. "Heights are a hard no for me."

Sadie chuckled, grinning. "No roller coasters, then?"

"Definitely not. I'm not really a thrillseeker. I'd prefer to just curl up with a good book." "She gets it from Dad," Martin said with a chuckle.

"Nothing wrong with that," Sadie said with a smile between Mary and Nicholas. "I'm a bit of an adrenaline junky."
