"Usually memoir or realistic fiction," she replied. "I like to set my characters in the real world."

“That’s fun.” He nodded. “Are you published? Trying to be?”

"Nah." She shook her head. "It's mostly for me; I'm not looking for any kind of publication."

"What about you? What do you do in your free time?"

“I’m a sports guy,” Meyer said with a grin. “Mostly like playing pick up, but like watching, too. And just being in nature in general. Hiking, hunting, fishing, things of the like.”

Nicholas resisted the urg eto roll his eyes; what a surprise. Mary nodded enthusiastically. "Oh, I hear there's great hiking and fishing around here. Have you gone up the mountain yet?"

"Oh, many times!" Meyer said with a grin and nod. "It's beautiful up there. There's this one little alcove you can hike up to where you can see over the entire valley. It's a brutal stretch but we've done it what, nine - ten times now?" He looked over at Sadie.
"Seven," she corrected with a smirk.
"Oh..." He gave a sheepish grin, looking back at Mary. "Well, it feels like ten."

"That's awesome." She nodded encouragingly. "Martin's a big hiker too; he takes his family on camping trips every summer."

"Oh yeah?" Meyer glanced towards the kitchen and raised his voice. "What's your favorite place you've ever visited so far, Martin?"

"The Black Hills in South Dakota," Martin called from the kitchen. "Hands down. It's gorgeous out there."

(ah shoot I thought that and then I doubted myself and thought he'd come back -- I'll edit)
"Nice!" Meyer shouted back, then glanced at Sadie. "We should check it out sometime."
"That sounds like a long drive..."
"Sounds like a road trip."
She rolled her eyes but smiled a little, shaking her head. "I mean... I'd like that."

"It's a very long drive," Nicholas said. "Dad took us when we were really little," Mary added. "We weren't the best behaved kids." "But it was worth it." Martin came in. "Dinner's ready, by the way!"

"Great!" Meyer grinned at him, then glanced back at Nicholas, deciding to try to be polite. "You like hiking, too, then?"

"When I was younger," he said, getting to his feet. "I loved it." "He's the one that got me into it." Martin led them into the small dining room, where a bowl of pasta salad was waiting with the table already set. "We'd go to the local hiking trail every Saturday when Mary and I were tiny. And then we'd do camping in the summer and on breaks a lot of the time."
