Oak Valley High, a "failing" high school known for its terrible test scores and array of rather, ahem, interesting students, serves as the bane of existence for one Rhys Hartman, a drug addicted, schizophrenic sixteen year old, lost in life and unsure what he wants from his future - if he wants a future at all. He's still a bit undecided about that part.

That is, until a new faculty member arrives - one Joseph Franzen, an equally eccentric urban homesteader, anthropologist, history buff, and food-obsessed English teacher. Desperate to change the kids' perspectives on their lives, Franzen's unusual teaching methods begin to take a hold, but can't seem to reach Rhys.

While Rhys continues to spiral downwards, Franzen struggles to find a method of mentorship that will turn Rhys' life around. Eventually, over tomatoes and tap dancing, he wins Rhys' trust, just in time for the school's big Showcase. However, not everything goes as everyone hopes, and the fallout leaves Franzen wondering if Rhys can really be saved.
