I was using stumble upon, just wasting time, when I came across this:

http://bookblog.net/gender/genie.php

Essentially, it claimed that this thing would identify my gender based on a piece of writing by me. I immediately posted a short story I had written some time ago in.

It then said that I was male.

Excited, I continued. All my short stories came out male.

Wait...what about my novel?

I posted each individual chapter. I began to recognize a pattern - in most chapters where my female characters had particularly dominant roles, it incorrectly said that I was female.

Then I got the idea of posting my entire novel. Well, what's been written so far.

I don't recommend it. I'm lucky my computer didn't crash.

Anyway...

The entire novel was male, overall.

Gender Genie works by identifying key words - commonly used words, like "the", "and", and "not". Some give points to female, some give points to male. The reason for the pattern I mentioned above is that "she" and "her" are among female words. (Strangely, "he" and "his" are not male words)

Wow, that's really fascinating. I've never really thought men and women wrote that differently. I notice that certain genres have more men or women writing them (Romance, Action) but I never would be able to guess the gender of an author if I didn't know already. Women sometimes write more "feminist" stories without females conforming to traditional gender roles, but in this day and age men are kinda pretty down with equality too, so I'm not sure either. Interesting.

I put in a story where my MC was a male, and it's from his point of view and it told me I was female! Gosh darn it.

A lot of my blog entries and most of my NaNo chapters said Female but five or six of the chapters said Male. It was interesting. :) It reminded me that I need to go back and edit my NaNo...

This looks very interesting... I'm putting something up. It called me male... I'm offended... And then, I put up two more pieces. It seems that whenever I write fiction, I'm female, but I'm male when I write nonfiction. Cool.
There once was a cat.
He wasn’t particularly fat.
Fuzzy was his favorite mat.
And really, that was that.

Oh, but did you really think so?
Keep reading, it’s just the start of the show!
And as for how far this tale will go…
Well, even the cat doesn’t know.

Funny stuff... I was doing some of my "Mutts" series:

Most were "female", regardless of what gender the POV might have been supposed to be. I actually find that kind of disappointing, since some of them are my most "male" pieces. But hey, at least it does work in guess my real gender!

One "Mutts" was a fictional newspaper article, but I put it in as "nonfiction", since that's what it is supposed to read as... It came out as "male," when my fictional author (I have the name and everything in the article) is supposed to be female... Hmm.

Very interesting.

Barack Obama's inaugural address is male. So is his election night victory speech, but just barely. :D

That's pretty scary.

My short story came out female. Hmm, okay.
My Great Expectations essay came out very male! I'm glad. Does that mean I didn't overwrite, wasn't too frilly? Or am I just sexist towards my own gender? :S
Regardless, at least it's evident I'm not stuck in a rut, as far as writing goes.

The first chapter to my new novel came out female! Though I use a lot of frilly stuff so I expected that much!
