If you got Firefox 3, there's a hack you can use to more than double your internet speed (if you have broadband that is). Thanks to it, my loading times for YWS' front page went from 3.8 seconds to 1.3 seconds, and wired.com, which always loads slowly for me, now loads immediately.

If you don't have Firefox 3, download it now! There's a link on the front page for Chimped Out, and in the header for default.

To implement the hack, do this:

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar.

2. Set "network.http.pipelining" and "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to true.

3. Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to 15. Some sites will tell you 30, but a number that high can break servers like the one YWS runs on. 15 is plenty good enough.

Heh. That's cool. I can't really tell what it does, though. It does seem to load just a bit faster...

Yeah, I found that on the net when I was using Firefox 2. I'm going to go check it's still working. Pipelining is awesome.

It works!

This is great for we impatient people. Thanks.

Does anyone know if this increases security risks, by any chance? Or if it's just a limit set on the speed?

Just did a quick search and couldn't find information on security risks. So my guess is it doesn't. What the hack primarily does is make a simple change to the way your browser interacts with a website. Without the hack, your browser requests each file (image, css file, html file, javascript) one at a time. So for a site like YWS, that can be 100 requests per page. With the hack, your browser is requesting multiple files at a time (in this case, 15).
