I'm starting to get into a lot more English bands now, with a focus on 'New Music'. I listen to XFM a lot.

In no particular order:

And many more. I like bands that write their own songs, which a lot of these do. I also like songs that tell a story or bring back memories.

I wish people would stop making these threads...they force me to run off and rant.

1. The Offspring: I've been listening to them for years now, and they always are a blast of fun to listen to. When I was in high school they supplied me plenty of imagination.

2. Tool: As my avatar would suggest, this band holds a deep meaning in my heart. Creative, revolutionary, whatever you call them, Tool is just amazing. And they are what I listen to most of the time when I'm writing poetry.

3. Collective Soul: Been listening to this band since I was seven years old. Just a grand old rock band from the 90's that knows how to really write music.

4. Nine Inch Nails: Just a good band to listen to when writing sci-fi kind of stuff; or stuff that's urban.

5. Disturbed: A typical rock bands of the millenium, yes, but David Draiman's an unbelievable singer and I strive to be like him.

I have a huge geeky love of the Barenaked Ladies. I've liked them for ages and ages. They're fun in that nerdy way, and I love a lot of their music for its spontaneity and childish spirit, but they can be deep (see "What a Good Boy" or "War on Drugs") or critical/satirical ("Fun & Games"). They're coming out with their first children's CD on May 6 and I'm super-excited. >.<

Recently I've also acquired a taste for the Mountain Goats. John Darnielle is an AMAZING lyricist.

I could never even come close to writing a comprehensive analysis of my favorite musicians, so I'll just try to pick a few.

Radiohead: In my opinion, this is the most consistently brilliant, out-of-the-box, and creative modern band. They deliver a unique style of music. The instrumentation and musicianship is all top-notch. Besides their musical innovativeness, they are also blazing new paths in the music industry by going indie and having released their latest album online for anyone to download at whatever price they want, including $0. Check out the album In Rainbows, as well as the standout songs Karma Police, High and Dry, and Creep from their earlier albums.

Elliott Smith: My favorite singer/songwriter style musician, this man had a pop sensibility and yet was able to stay away from the cliche songwriting that dominates the market. And he had amazing guitar chops to boot. Check out the songs Between the Bars, Independence Day, Lookin' Over My Shoulder, and Angel in the Snow.

Sigur Rós: Who doesn't like a band whose average song length is about 10 minutes and whose vocalist sings in Icelandic (when he sings in a language at all, that is)? Well, understandably so this group is far from mainstream, and yet has a fan base that belies its enigmatic style. This band is best experienced (outside of an actual concert, I mean) by listening to an entire album at once, as the songs tend to blend into one another and create a fabric of sound. I recommend Ágætis Byrjun, though any album should do the trick. They are all great.

I'm a metalhead and I prefer to listen to progressive metal, but I also like good hiphop and a small amount of rap. Punk, emoscreamo, and country I hate.

One of my favorite bands is Kamelot. Their lyrics are profound and moving, and their music gives me chills. Not to mention their music videos are fantastic.

I also love Disturbed for similar reasons. Their music is very driving and powerful.

I also like weird stuff like Massive Attack and Dead Can Dance. Their music and lyrics are eerie and strangely calming. I like to listen to Massive Attack especially on drives in the morning in the fog, or even at night.

The list is long but these are the bands I listen to frequently. Favorite band is Tool, I pretty much like anything Maynard James Keenan does.

Why do I like them? Music is a mysterious thing. Music is a very religious thing. I like these artists and their songs because something about their music speaks to me. It's nothing so cerebral as lyrical truthfulness or teenage angst/rebellion. It's more of a raw gut attraction.

They just sound good.

PS: I lied. Lyrics do have something to do with it. They must be poetic, catchy, and intelligent all at the same time. And for the most part, these bands fit the bill.
