Hey guys! Looking for your help with something!

I'm someone who loves to travel and I've been to quite a few countries... but I realised a few days ago that I haven't read books from or about those countries. And that's something I'd like to change!

So with the help of YWS, mostly for fun, I'd like to compile a list of books:

Rules:

- copy and paste the enspoilered list below with one extra book on the list. Only add one book at a time, you can come back and add the others in separate posts, but let other people have a go first!
- only one book per country
- the book can either be a) set in that country or b) by an author from that country
- preferably fiction, but memoirs and poetry will also do the trick!
- it doesn't have to be any kind of special or high brow book or anything like that.
- put the country you've chosen in bold to make it easier to see ;)

I've done Ireland to show you what I mean!

You're putting me in a bad position, Stell. I can't just pick one of my favorite Indonesian books, there are way too many.

But meh, fine, I'll pick a really popular one. I could rave forever about Indonesian literature though, I need to get back to reading more of it.

Yesss! <3

Although @StellaThomas, is it just one book, fullstop or one book per country? I'll change accordingly

Adding my faves for India, Singapore:
I've only read one book by a Sri Lankan authour, but, I did like it, and I'm hoping to read some more.

@Lava just one at a time, but you can come back and add in your fave Indian one next!

@Sacredledge omg thanks. Indonesia is somewhere I'm going this summer and part of the reason I started this is so that I would have books to read from the places I'm going. The main reason I made that rule is to avoid like tons of books from the US and the UK, but feel free to list some more Indonesian books, just not on the masterlist!

@BlueAfrica- good choice! I've actually only read it in French and never English oops

So Stells, this book is complicated. It's called:
To Timbuktu: Nine Countries, Two People, One Trye Story
Don't get it mixed up with the similarly titled book "To Timbuktu and Beyond", which is about missionaries, rather than this one being about these English Language teachers traveling around Asia and Africa.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/930 ... -timbuktu#
I don't remember all of the featured countries and since it's quite a few, I'm just going to list them rather than try and do the highlighting, because that would get rather confusing?

  • Morocco
  • China
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
  • Laos
  • Mali

It's pointed at high schoolers/college kids.
I read it when I was way too young and I'm just starting to re-read it now.
It's mainly a comedy but it's a real memoir, so it's got that equal mixture.
Hope this is what you're looking for.

@LadyLizz - thanks! I think for now we should just stick to one country and for this purpose I think Mali is the best one to go for as a) it's in the name! and b) I think it'll be hardest to find other books for. I've added it to the list below.

It's set in British Columbia, Canada. And it's just kinda a goofy little story that made me think a lot- even if the characters and their actions are a little over-the-top it seems.

Here's a Swedish author + book! I love all of Fredrik Backman's books that I've read so far - but just listed "Britt-Marie was Here" which is pretty fantastic. "A Man Called Ove" (by Fredrik Backman) is also set in Sweden and is adorable, hilarious, and heartbreaking too.
