Ghost Hunters Marathon!!! :D
One of my favourite shows called Ghost Hunters is having an all-day marathon on the Sci-Fi channel! Woot for me! Call me crazy, but i'm a total believer in the paranormal and what not.

Using my tax return on a worthy "instrument of war" to add to my collection of sharp and pointy things.

I finally broke down after several months of contemplating and researching on getting a sword. I really want one from the American Revolution but I'm not ready yet to swallow thousands of dollars.

Instead, since I have a realitive from the Civil War, I thought it would only be proper to get a sword from the period...

Mine is from the maker, C. Roby (Christopher Roby) and my sword is a Musician's Sword. This maker only made 3500 of them, and after the war, his business went bankrupt.... I guess they didn't have a savings account back in the day, nor did Roby invest into Stocks or Bonds, lol.

This is not mine, but here's a picture of one of the 4 markings of Roby. This mark shown in the picture is the mark that's on my sword:

This is also not my sword, but it is a Musician's Sword. At least it'll give you all an idea of what they looked like.

On mine, it is dated 1863, US, and F.S.S. (the inspector's mark) for the swordsmith - Roby.

Soo... fishr has a 140 year old antique and from the Civil War no less! It would be neat if I had a Confederate (which are sought after AND EXPENSIVE!), but since my 3rd g. great grandfather was a 1st Sarg of the Union Army, I think it should only fit. :P

About Christopher Roby (if you're interested):

Christopher Roby, W. Chelmsford, Mass.
Christopher Roby ran a prolific, but short-lived swordmaking business from 1861 until 1867. In this time, his company produced 32,200 M1860 cavalry sabers (dated 1861,63,64, and 65), 3500 M1840 musician swords (dated 1863-65), 12,500 M1840 NCO swords (dated 1862-65), and an unknown number of M1840 light artillery sabers. Except for the first sabers sold in 1861, Roby’s marks generally followed two forms. The NCO, musician, and rarely cavalry swords had a circular mark made up of the words C. Roby W. Chelmsford MS, while the cavalry and artillery sabers had a linear C. Roby over a half-circular W. Chelmsford and a linear Mass. The assumed 1861 stamp is merely a line saying C.Roby. Another identifying feature of Roby cavalry sabers is that they have two extra turns of wire wrap on the grip, making it extend completely through the pommel. This trait is otherwose only found on M1840 models, which makes it possible to identify a Roby saber if the marks have been worn off. Roby also made officer’s swords and fraternal swords, but that topic is another story entirely. The 1865 dated swords were not delivered until after the cessation of hostilities, and therefore never saw active duty during the war. The Roby Company went bankrupt and sold its name and equipment shortly after the war.

Did I mention I'm happy?
The sadness drains through me rather than skating over my skin. It travels through every cell to reach the ground. I filter it yet strangely enough, I keep what was pure and it is the dirt that leaves.

This thread died and it makes me sad. I was thinking what a great mood I'm in and I remembered this thread and I was like WOAH so here I am.

Starting my distance learning course, picking out new glasses yesterday (still happy about that today), deciding to train for a race and going to the pub quiz tonight all make me happy today. :D And music! Lots of music! And the sun is shining!
Matt.

Congrats Demeter! I'm happy because today during an assembly, my crazy math teacher Mrs. B came over and chewed out my best friend for holding hands with her boyfriend. My friend held hands with HER boyfriend, not the teacher's boyfriend. That would just be awkward. Anyway, that's the #1 thing that made me laugh today.

Aww Lauren! <3

Well I suppose the thing that made me happy today stemmed from yesterday -- I got a few books for a good deal and now I'm reading them. XD
