Is it possible to make an original story?

It's been really annoying for me, writing a story and then finding something quite similar along the shelves of "Chapters"(a very nice bookstore.) Working for many, many MANY hours on something and then showing it to someone and having them say that I "copied it off a site" or "just took it out of a book" My newest creation is called "post-it " and is written entirely in post-it notes. (only not literally, which is slightly confusing) A girl going into eighth grade faces the troubles of moving,crushes, boyfriends, annoying siblings, and divorced parents all in one summer. She decides to use post-it notes instead of "leaking out her feelings in a diary" The girl (Elizabeth,) writes daily explaining the trials that happened that day in only a short post-it note. What I want to know 1. Is this story original?Have you seen something similar to it before? 2. Wanna read it..? 3. Have you ever faced the same troubles?

Plus you get people who TELL you it's unoriginal.

A friend of mine read the first chapter of my book and claimed that it was EXACTLY like LOTR.

Now, my book DOES have a powerful object, which might be connected to the One Ring or something like that, but that isn't even HINTED at in the first chapter. As of the first chapter, you don't even know it EXISTS. And the races, nations, and characters are NOTHING like LOTR.

So, yes. People will TELL you that your story is unoriginal, because they're stupid.

Hey Daedalus, I'm Icarus. Do your thing, and for God's sake use something better than WAX this time.

In my experience on the forums and outside of it, I've learned that while there's never an ORIGINAL story now, you can indeed take a idea used before and twist it around....

In fact, I'm pretty sure someone on this forum said that to me. I just can't remember who...
