Hey there, Sabir!
Welcome to the YWS family!
I'm Meep, a Greeter. We're the ones with the cyan coloured usernames.

Do note some of our very important rules:
-Chatspeak and CAPS lock should be kept to a minimal.
-For everyone piece of work you post, remember to review 2 works of others.

Magic Realism?
Erm, I think that falls under the Fantasy fiction forum?
You could browse around there.
There ought to be something about it.

So tell us more about yourself!
What do you like to read and write about?
Any favourite authors? Books? Songs? Bands?

~Oh, feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
I'd be happy to help :D
See you later alligator!

Hi Meep!

Thanks for the greeting, and the info. Just one question though, what is 'chatspeak'?

Tell you a bit about myself? Of course! I love it when someone asks me about my favourite subject!

I guess the best thing for me to do would be to be honest and admit that I am looking to read the same sort of stuff from other people that I myself am hoping to write. This would include prose and narrative about British society, lifestyle and characters etc. On the other end of this I am also quite interested in Magical Realism and all those grey areas where fantasy meets reality.

Okay, well in terms of my interest I may come across as somewhat of a strange - or maybe I should use the word eclectic - character compared to other writers (I say this but I must admit I don't actually know what many contemporary writers are like).

What I mean by this is that my interests have always ranged from the more introspective and sophisticated quests for knowledge and understanding to the down-right primitive and unashamed celebration of ignorance and superficiality. I could be on the bus reading a collection of essays on Shakespeare's tragedies by Bradley, but at the same time listening to a thumping and bass-heavy 50 Cent song on my i-pod.

Okay, my favourite author would probably have to be a tie between Gabriel Garcia Marquez (hence the request for Magical Realism) and Salman Rushdie.
I say Marquez because his writing is just out of this world and he is Rushdie's literary daddy, as even Rushdie admits, but I'm also compelled to include Rushdie perhaps because of his national heritage and the relationship it has with my own ethnic origin. But I must say, I do sometimes get annoyed by Rushdie's writing only because he seems to use virtually the same techniques and musings (i.e. the Gothic 'double', ideas of time's linear and cylcical nature etc.) in almost all his novels, and he always seems to put himself as the lead character!
Oh, and Toni Morrison also ranks highly.

My favourite Book is either Marquez' '100 Years of Solitude' or 'Song of Solomon' by Toni Morrison.

I don't think I have a single favourite song as there are a number of songs which appeal to me when I'm in different moods. In general though, I'm definitely a hip-hop kid - just a hip-hop kid with a lot of alternative rock and Indian bhangra on his i-pod.

My favourite band at the moment are definitely Outkast, although I'm sort of scared that their next album may just prove to be the final nail in the coffin for the legendary chemistry they once had.
In fact, at one point I was even thinking of writing a novel based loosely on Outkast, as the extreme difference in their characters and their viewpoints and the ideas this brought into my head about the essential duality of existence were really interesting to me. It was also going be to be partly based on other legendary hip-hop groups that have played on this same duality (for example Public Enemy - why do you think one of the members, Chuck D, was a straight thinking, intelligent and well-spoken rapper with poignant and politically geared lyrics, and the other main member - Flava Flav - was just a crazy wacky guy with an absurdly funky dress sense who just used to dance wildly around the stage screaming 'yeeeaaaahhh boooooyy!!' ?? Because it's the perfect chemistry!)

I hope that's not too much of an introduction, I know I've blabbered on a bit, but it's your fault for asking!

Haha

Okay see you later

Chatspeak is short form. Like text language. For example, 'you' is shortened to 'u'. Other examples include l8r, b4... that kind of stuff. *shudder* Let's keep our english standard up, shall we? :D

Tell you a bit about myself? Of course! I love it when someone asks me about my favourite subject!

I see someone here is a bit big on their ego...
I love deflating egos.
Fine, I don't want to hear about you.
*covers ears* Lalalalala, I can't hear you, lalalalala...
I'm just kidding.

Are you British? You seem real interested in stories based on that :D
*attempts to imitate a faux British accent*
Would you like some Earl Grey? XD

Okay, well in terms of my interest I may come across as somewhat of a strange - or maybe I should use the word eclectic - character compared to other writers (I say this but I must admit I don't actually know what many contemporary writers are like).

Hi-five, dude! I'm eclectic AND eccentric XD

What I mean by this is that my interests have always ranged from the more introspective and sophisticated quests for knowledge and understanding to the down-right primitive and unashamed celebration of ignorance and superficiality.

Looks like we have stuff in common, eh?
Except, I tend to lean towards more intelligent activities.

Well, we have similar tastes in music, considering I listen to just about anything. But my preference is Pop, Rock, Jazz, Classical. Then Hip-hop, R&B...and the list goes on.

My favourite band at the moment are definitely Outkast, although I'm sort of scared that their next album may just prove to be the final nail in the coffin for the legendary chemistry they once had.

Haha, stop at the top. That way they won't risk getting knocked off their pedestal.

That sounds like a really funky, interesting story that you're writing.
My favourite genre will always be Wit & Humour. I love intelligent remarks/insults and hilarious stuff.
I can laugh at the stupidest thing, or at something really clever. Basically, I laugh.

I hope that's not too much of an introduction, I know I've blabbered on a bit, but it's your fault for asking!

I'm sorry I asked then. *remorseful*
Hehe, I'm just joking. It's always nice to get to know the newbies.
Especially when a Greeter's (cyan coloured usernames) job is to smother newbies with hugs and kisses.
Again, I'm not serious.
Haha :D

I'll see you around then!
~Feel free to PM me for anything.

Hiyas Sabir! Great to meet ya! *tips hat, even though I'm not wearing one* Welcome to our humongous, dysfunctional family! Meep has already gone over the rules, so I guess I can do colors! Meep has already told you that Greeters have cyan colored names, but there are other people too.

Purple - They're instructors. They're the people who you ask for an in depth critique. However, starting from March 1 until March 8, you can go ask the Greeters. There's this thing called Purps vs. Blues, and we take over each others' jobs for a while. But still feel free to ask any one of us for anything you need.

Light Green and Dark Green - Junior Moderators and Moderators respectively. Any other forum issues, and you can ask them.

Red - Administrators. They keep the site up and running!

Orange - Distinguished members. They're retired mods and admins.

Well, one more question. What are your interests in movies? Most of my friends are movie geeks, so I get overloaded with everything they say. Anyway, what do you think?
So, feel free to PM me for anything you need. See ya around sometime!
There once was a cat.
He wasn’t particularly fat.
Fuzzy was his favorite mat.
And really, that was that.

Oh, but did you really think so?
Keep reading, it’s just the start of the show!
And as for how far this tale will go…
Well, even the cat doesn’t know.

Hey, Sabir and welcome to YWS!

Wow, that was very detailed - you seem very intereting :D
So, is Sabir just your username or your real name, if I may ask? ;)

Uhm ... what exactly is magical realism? (*looking for an excuse* I'm not English! :P)
It does kinda sound like fantasy or something, but I'm not really sure ...

Yeah. Hope you'll post some of your work soon - let me know when you do ;)

Have fun :D

Hiya and welcome!

Some more little rules:

A review must be about three to six lines to count as a proper review. Make sure that when you comment on a story, you have something to comment on. ;)

Rated works are what we like to see here on YWS. Rated works (unless rated R) show up on the front page of YWS. Rated R works have the f-word and/or graphic scenes.

I've done some fantasy that boarders on Magic Realism as you called it. It's mostly a modern-world fantasy, but it's not posted.

If you have any questions, PM me.

Hi Guys!!

I'm back!! And I'm just writing to say that I apologize for the fact that I've been missing in action lately, I'm going through quite a lot of crazy stuff at the moment (looking for a new job and moving into a new flat!) and so my creative interests have been somewhat sidelined lately. In fact, a lot of my life has been sidelined lately, and my part-time hobby of shooting crack up my arm whilst smacking up one of my hoes has really suffered the most though (haha... don't worry, just a joke).

Thanks for all the greetings you guys have given me. I never expected this much of a response, not even from aspiring writers!!

To Meep - there's a very fine line between eclectic and crazy young lady. I'm having trouble deciding which one you are... haha!! and by the way, I'm not cocky, I'm a very sensitive and delicate and innocent little flower petal really ... :)
And yes, I am British. And yes, I would like soem Earl Grey please

Watervyper - thanks for the info.
As for my movie interests I guess I don't have a specific genre, just something that either really builds the mood or makes me think. For example : the Usual Suspects, Shawshank Redmemption, Coen brothers movies are good.
Oh, and by the way, since we're talking about movies I have a bold statement to make which has been on my mind for a while now :

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT IS THE CLEVEREST AND MOST INTELLECTUALLY LAYERED MOVIE TO HIT THE MAINSTREAM SINCE AMERICAN BEAUTY.
Anyone who feels strongly enough about the movie to agree or disagree I would love to hear your thoughts.

To Night Mistress - if you don't mind me saying your username is unusually sexy sounding... not something I would expect for a site like this, unless you're secretly on the prowl and using this site to liaise with secret lovers!! Ha!!

anyways ...

To My Sunshine - yes it is my real name, unfortunately. Is Sunshine your real name? Haha... you wish...
Magical Realism is hard to define, but it kind of deals with stories where very normal and realistic things happen (hence the 'Realism') but then very unnatural, unrealistic and even supernatural occurrences will also take place (hence the 'Magic') and they will not be questioned or dwelt upon by the narrator. They will occur as if they were the most natural occurrences in the world. Okay,. so I don't make the genre sound great from my description but it really is!!

To Rosey Unicorn - I must say, judging from your username I would imagine that you like to delve into a bit of the old fantasy ... I would actually like to read it if you don't mind. Just to ask, what sort of themes do you try and explore with your Magical Realism?

Okay then guys. good to talk to you again. And by the way, yes, I promise I will get round to reading some work and offering honest and detailed reviews soon, and then I will post some of my own stuff. It's just things are a bit hectic for me at the moment, and my parole officer keeps nagging me ... haha, just kidding!!

Hmm, it depends on your definition of "old fantasy." I don't have some "classic" fantasy elements such as dragons and elves, but I do have lots of magic and Elementals. And it's a bit rare for me to use the traditional fantasy backdrop. I do have a novel in the works, though. But I probably won't post it for awhile. I want to finish it and edit before I do that, since the subplots are a bit messy for my liking.

When it comes to themes, those who know me might think I'm a hypocrite for saying this, but I explore the effects humans have on the environment, which is controlled by magical creatures (fairies, unicorns and Pegasus). I also explore some effects of genetic engineering, along with loyalty, true friends, duty... I could go on. I guess I just wave a bunch of psychological aspects into my writing to make good subplots. The end result usually takes awhile to explain, since I don't even know everything that I'm exploring.

My username really comes from my life-long love of fairy-tale magic. Fairies, elves, unicorns-- all the pretty things little girls imagine (my early stories even had a fairy-tale plot. But, since that doesn't fit my characters, I have ditched that story-line). And, yes, that includes pink!

Hm, I might actually work on my Magical Realism story next. (I have too many stories on the go...) I just fixed the plot, and my current work needs some more plot-kinks ironed out.
