Future Nightmare, Present Dream
I was running as fast as my legs could carry me and as I ran I could hear leaves crunch under my feet. I could feel a zephyr blow hair away from my face, and branches scratch away at my arms. It was pitch black and I could see nothing ahead of me, but could feel nature trying to enclose me within its realms. I kept running still trying to escape, when I began to see a faint glow in contrast to the relatively dark milieu. As I inched closer the glow got brighter almost blinding me. Yet I still inched closer curious to see what was glowing. As I inched closer I began to see a figure that resembled a boy, and soon realized it was. He was tall, and muscular which was all I could see with his back towards me.
He abruptly began to turn around as if he sensed my presence, and I could fully see his face. He had warm welcoming brown eyes, and a toothy brilliant smile. His brown hair almost looked like chocolate, and his beige skin reminded me of sand.
He stared at me for a while as if he was analyzing me unsure of what to do. Then slowly he began to outstretch a hand towards me with his palm up. I realized he wanted me to take his hand. Hesitantly I began to move towards him not sure if he was my savior or death reaper. He obviously could tell I was afraid and nodded his head to try and reassure me it was safe. I eventually took hold of his hand hoping he could be my sanctuary, and protect from the dangers of the wilderness.

Like hell on fire were the first words I heard when I awoke. Viva Voce’s “Octavio” quietly played from my ipod, and a beam of sunlight poured into my room from my open window. Simultaneously my mother walked into my room.
“First day of school huh”, she said casually leaning against the door with her hands
crossed in front of her chest.
“Yeah ummm I guess so”, I said trying to sound enthusiastic about the first day of school.
Every year I knew what to look forward to, and what to expect. Every morning I still walked to school with my best friend Alexander I’ve known ever since we were little kids. We usually had the same classes, and did most of our activities together. He was usually always there for, and has always been a loyal friend. I could always count on him whenever it was needed…..
“Aydan? Aydan?”Earth to Aydan?” my mother said waving her hand in front of my face.
“Oh sorry”, I said trying to stop reflecting on my junior year in high school.
“No big deal, but you know you can’t space out if you want good grades”.
“Yes, mother I know”.
“Got it?”
“Yeah”.
She then left quietly closing the door behind her.
I jumped out of bed, and walked into my bathroom. I rested my hands on the marble sink, and looked into the mirror. I knew what image would look back at me. Brown chocolate eyes, and honey skin were the first things I saw, Onyx dark hair that created waves and stopped at my shoulder were next, and full lips that were slightly red were last. I was always used to the image that stared at me every morning, but there was always one that seemed to follow.
Lucian Gallows.
He was my best friends when I was younger, and abruptly left on a Monday. I can remember the entire scenario like it was yesterday when I last saw him. I was walking down the hallway and turned into room 109 which was Ms. Carson’s third grade class. I walked over to the desk closest to the window on the right side of the classroom, and slung my gray backpack over my seat. Usually Lucian was the first person in the classroom, and would always greet me once I sat down, but this morning he wasn’t there. I was pondering reasons why he wasn’t here this morning, and thinking maybe he had a doctor’s appointment. I waited for about ten more minutes before Ms.Carson finally closed the
classroom door, and began making her announcements.
“Good morning everyone”, she said standing in front of the classroom with her hands clasped together.
“Good morning Ms. Carson”, we all replied.
“Everyone I have an announcement to make so everyone hush up and open your ears”, she started.” Today some of you may have noticed that Lucian is not here today. If you have noticed he is not here because he and his family have moved. I just got a call this morning from Mrs. Gallows saying that Lucian will not be attending school here anymore. His father got a job opportunity out of the country, and has decided to take the offer so this is why Lucian is absent today. In his place will be another student who will be coming tomorrow. Her name is Marissa Jones and everyone should welcome her, and be on your best behavior”.
My mouth hung open as if I had just heard my parents died. No Lucian didn’t leave he would have told me this the day before or the last time I saw him. Maybe Ms. Carson just heard wrong and maybe instead his family was moving down the street not out of the country. He can’t leave, he can’t leave I thought. The boy I once shared cookies with, and played tag with was not going to be here anymore. The person who made me laugh, and helped me with my assignments was gone forever, and there was nothing I could do about it.
I began to feel tears swell up in my eyes, and knew I could not stop myself from crying. Suddenly the chattering of everyone talking about Lucian’s move was like wrecking balls crashing into building. My ears began to ring, and I began crying. I tried to keep quie hoping that if no one heard me no one would ask any questions, but soon enough my crying got loud enough the entire class turned around.
“Look she’s a cry baby!”
“She’s such a wuss”.
Everyone began teasing me, and calling me a cry baby, but I couldn’t help it. I wondered why no one else was phased or unhurt by the announcement.
“Class quiet down right now”, Ms. Carson yelled to the class.
The class immediately got quiet, and nothing else was heard except my cries and tears hitting the desk.
“Aydan would you like to go to the bathroom, and get some tissue?” She asked.
“Yes”, I mumbled.
“Okay then go get some tissue alright”.
I got up and an out the classroom towards the bathroom down the hall. I couldn’t believe that everyone could change within one minute.
I soon snapped out of another painful memory, and began continuing my daily routine. As I look back into the mirror I still see him standing there his head slightly tilted to the side. His green eyes were looking at me and his mouth in a straight line. His expression was black neither sad nor happy just blank. I shake my head and close my eyes hoping he would get away from my mirror, and in an instant he did.

I hurry out of my bathroom, and quickly get dressed. Black pants, white shirt, and a gray sweater was the only thing I could find that wasn’t dirty. I grabbed my backpack, and ran downstairs to find my father drinking tea, and reading a newspaper.
“How are you kiddo?”
“I’m fine dad”.
“You still walkin’ to school with Alexándro or is your mother taking you”.
“Dad his name is Alexander and yes I am walking to school with him, is that a problem
for you?”
“Nope”, he said and began to put his newspaper.
“Not again dad”.
“Look Aydan I think maybe you should find some more friends and not hang around one person. You know it can stunt a teen’s growth.”
“How could you possibly know this?”
“I was once a teen myself”.
“Well obviously”.
“All I’m saying is maybe you should expand your social circle.”
“But aren’t you happy with me actually having one good friend, and not a zillion of them who don’t give a crap about me”.
“Yeah but-“
“But what dad? Look okay I’m gonna be late for school so I just better go.”
I grabbed my backpack off of the kitchen chair, and walked out of the kitchen towards the front door. I open the door preparing to walk towards Alexander’s house to find him already at my door. His eyes were focused on the brown rugged welcome mat, but when he saw my navy sneakers his focus changed to me. A grin begins to spread across his face showing a luminous smile.
“Hey Aydan”.
“Hey Alexander I was just going to walk to your house, but you’re already here so I guess not”.
“Well I got dressed early and decided to be a gentleman and come pick you up for a change”.
“Yeah about your clothes what’s the occasion?”
He had a gray and black business shirt, and black jeans with black dress shoes.
“Oh umm nothing I just felt like you know trying something different you know it’s a new year and all”.
“Are you sure you’re not trying something different for someone?”
“Yeah I’m sure”.
“Hmmmmmm”.
“What?’ he asked and began to walk towards the sidewalk indicating we should start walking.
“I remember last year at the end of the school you were talking to someone”.
“And? I talk to a lot of people”.
“Yeah but you kept blushing every time this someone kept talking to you”.
