The airport was crowded. People lining up, people coming, people saying goodbyes while other were saying hi and some other were even crying. Emotions, that’s what they called them, that’s what I used to call them, and even when I knew they existed I never got to fully understand them. But the last thing I wanted to do was understand these weak human emotions. Sometimes I even thanked for not feeling them; they made you vulnerable and for someone like me, vulnerability was not acceptable.
I finally reached the airline’s counter. The woman’s face looked shocked as soon as she saw me, but when she saw that I reacted to it she composed herself. People did that a lot; I never knew if it was because of my extreme paleness or my strange way of dressing or my killer beauty. Not that I believed that but people often said that to me. I reached for my purse and took out my passport. Romanian Citizen it said. And that’s clearly what I was, or what I strongly believed I was. The woman in the counter and everyone around me believed that, and it worked for me perfectly. The woman signed my papers and gave me back my passport. She wished me a nice trip as I was going.
I continued walking through the crowded airport. I hated crowded places but I was getting use to them. The smells and sounds that humans produced were hardly bearable; the glances were irritating. I tried hard to blend in, to be as human as possible. I wore a black long sleeved shirt and a black skirt with black tights and black boots, in a country like this one no one cared if you dressed like if you had months of mourning. Boots weren’t my favorite choice for walking in such a crowded airport, but as I said before I had to blend in, and no matter how long I had to walk I had to stand the uncomfortable sound they made.
I passed shops, more counters, and entrance ways as I was walking, with my luggage that would have been impossible to carry for a human in my hands, until I finally reached door c6 and found her. I knew it was her by her distinctive smell. She was sitting in the last row of chairs with crossed legs. She had a yellow dress that fitted closely to her tall figure, her long blonde hair grabbed in a ponytail that reached her waist.
“Danielle” I heard her say as she turned her head and faced me.
“Fae” I said in a soft quite murmur that I was sure she heard and she could think whatever she wanted but I made my position clear with the sound of my voice. Her happy façade suddenly disappeared when she heard it. She knew what I thought, she knew that I didn’t want her anywhere near me in this trip and yet, she was sent. And my not surprise was turn into surprise when I realized that she wasn’t alone, her brother Julian was sent too. Julian was exactly like his sister: tall, blonde, with green eyes, even after being changed they were exactly alike. They had the same beauty.
I walked to them, slowly, not knowing whether to resign and go with them or fight them in that exact instant and rip their heads off. I chose the first one; I couldn’t expose our kind so I waited until they stood up.
“I’m here, mow let’s go” I said, bored.
“Yes, we were just waiting for you” Julian said.
“Oh, really I didn’t notice. I thought you were taking a cup of coffee” sarcasm, bored.
“Look, we know you can do this alone but...”
“Then why are you here?” I said, interrupting Julian as he spoke.
“Let me finish” he said “But… Vancouver is a different story; they are powerful, not like us but still. They have rules. Rules I’m sure you are not going to follow. I know we make the rules, but we have to respect another empire’s rules. And what is happening now in Vancouver is much more than just killing the threat, because right this second we don’t know what the threat is”
As always or at least every time he spoke, I was dumbfounded. I knew that what he was saying is true. I had to swallow all my pride and work with them; actually I had to follow their instructions. I wasn’t alone now, I had a team or the team had me. I didn’t know, I was trying to picture me working with and for them. It was definitely going to be challenging.
The three of us walked to the immigration counter. We stopped to give our passports and get them signed. It was quick. We didn’t last hours there. We had an advantage; we were first class and clients of the airlines so it was obvious we were attended first. We got our papers back and started walking to the airplane’s door. During that 3 or 4 minutes that lasted the trip to the door, I thought about how near I was going to be from home, my once upon a time home. But with that thoughts came the memories, lots of them and as soon as they started coming I pushed them out of my mind. Julian most has felt my mood changing because he instantly turned to look at me.
“I’m ok” I lied and continued walking. We reached the door and got in. First class passengers with all the benefits a human could have, but there was the catch, we weren’t exactly humans, actually we weren’t humans at all. The seats were soft and comfortable even recline- able. I got to seat alone so I had all the pillows. It was so comfortable that I could have fallen asleep, but it was not possible I wasn’t able to sleep. I hadn’t slept for over 74 years and I can’t feel tired. It’s not like I wanted to, but sometimes I wished I would sleep, escape reality for at least a few seconds. It was going to be a long trip to Vancouver and at some point of it I was going to start feeling uncomfortable in this little cabin, claustrophobic almost. So I closed my eyes and waited for the engine to start and my companion’s whispers to stop.
It was like five O’clock when I opened my eyes again. I didn’t sleep; I just tried to block all sound from my mind, all sound that could disturb my oblivious moment of concentration. We had arrived. Julian and Fae were getting up from their seats while I was still opening my eyes. I got up as fast as I could and ran, pushing and hitting as many people as it was possible to join them. I knew they noticed I finally caught up with them but they didn’t even turn to look at me, not even one nod. After we reached the immigration counter for International arrivals, they decided to humiliate themselves and talk to me.
“You finally did it” Fae said looking at her papers.
“NO, I did it about 10 minutes ago, I just didn’t want to disturb you” sarcasm again.
They didn’t talk to me again until we were out of the airport waiting for our car to come pick us up. But we didn’t have to wait. A black Mercedes was already in the entrance waiting for us. The driver was already holding the door open for us.
“Good Afternoon. Mrs. and Mr. Legard” he paused and looked at me “Mrs. Kerr, I’m glad to meet you” I couldn’t say the same so, I just smiled and nodded.
We got inside the car. The inside was black leather. The driver got inside after he put our luggage in the back. He started driving. I was surprised when I heard that we weren’t taking an airplane but we were going to be driven to Williams Lake instead. It was 202 miles; it was going to take about two days!!
But after much arguing, my faithful companions agreed to take an airplane, a small of course. but it was going to save us a huge amount of time. So, we took the flight from Vancouver to Williams Lake. I thought we were staying in Vancouver but apparently the Canadian coven wasn’t staying in Vancouver.
It was about an hour until we arrived to the airport. We were soon out of it and another car was already waiting for us. It was fourteen miles to the city, but we weren’t going to the city. The driver turned right after about 6 miles from the airport. The car got into a very narrow trail that I supposed finished about finished about three miles ahead of us. We were in the outskirts of town now, far away from any nearby village.
The forest around us was thick and extremely dull, black with no light at all, it seemed like it was going o consume us. But somehow it made me feel like I was home, or what I called home at least. The night was clear pretty much like a Romanian night. My human eyes would have been burned by such darkness; but thankfully I had them no longer and the memory of them was uncomfortable. But still, I closed my eyes and refused to see the darkness.
Through my eyelids I saw a small glint of light. When I opened my eyes I saw that there were little lamps lighting the way to the house. The little lamps finished when we reached the gate of the house and I finally saw it. It was huge, not like ours, but still huge. As I got out the house I noticed the glass walls facing south and the beautiful windows in the lower floor. Even in the dark the house looked beautiful. But my senseless pride was way more powerful than I was, so I just made an unimpressed face.
I slowly walked to the front door but Fae was already there with two servants. God, how I hated when she did things so fast. Ha, just to show me she was superior? Sure, she knew I was way too proud to admit it, besides there was no way she was superior to me. Just because she might have been a little prettier than me and way older, it didn’t mean she was more than me. But that surely counted for something. So I put a huge smile in my face and walked toward the door where she was.
The servants were formally dressed like for going to a party or something, or maybe, which I thought seemed more likely, for meeting royalty. And that’s when I got it.
“Welcome Mrs. Fae, Mr. Julian” they said as they made a slight reverence with their heads and then turned to me “Mrs. Danielle, it’s a pleasure to meet you”
“Peter, John” Fae said. Peter was the taller and older servant, john was the smaller and chubbier servant “It’s been years. I’m so happy to see you” It was a warm welcome from both the servants and the Legard siblings. I was left behind awkward, until I decided it was time to go inside the house.
“Follow me please. My master will be very pleased when he sees that you’ve come. He’s been waiting for you” Peter told us and showed us the way.
The inside of the house was as lovely as the outside. The whole house was so clear. The halls were majestic. We were led to a hall in the second floor and walked until we reached the last door in the corridor.
“We leave you here. Our master would prefer to talk to you in privacy” And so they left us there and they returned to the main hall. That whole master thing was starting to irritate me. Not even we, Romanians, obliged our servants to call us masters. And suddenly there’s this little coven that forces their servants to call them masters. But again, I had to swallow up my arrogance and push myself to go inside the dark room that seemed to be a library, a very 18th century like library. Its classic beauty was its most noticeable feature. It had hundreds of books, from old papyrus to 21st century novels.
It was quite dark, darker than any other room in the house. All of a sudden a figure appeared from the right corner, a man’s figure that became more visible as it stepped into the light.
“Julian, Fae” the man said as he came closer, a huge smile on his face. “My friends what a nice surprise, I thought you weren’t coming” his voice was soft but still manly. He walked until all his features were clearly visible. He had green eyes, his hair was hazel, strange combination for hair and eyes I though. He was obviously old, but only his eyes showed it. To any other average being he would have looked like a man in his late thirties. But to us he was one of the oldest members of our kind.
“Darius, my friend” Julian spoke to him eagerly and walked toward him. They hugged each other and pated each other’s shoulders. Fae slowly walked toward them and stood still for a moment until Darius finally gave her his attention.
“Fae, dear, you look stunning. Well like you have always been” he said that part really slow. What uplift for her already too high self esteem.
“Darius, you are always so charming. I missed you so much” And she stepped forward to hug him. The three of them continued talking while I was still standing near the door frame. Believe it or not, I felt comfortable there. I carried along some weak human complex with me through my transformation. So, my human complex was shyness. I didn’t really liked being in the spotlight, and even less when older vampires looked at you as a weak resemblance of their kind.
But my comfortable state didn’t last long. As they were talking, Darius suddenly shot a quick glance at me, but he went back and continued staring for a moment. I looked down and waited for him to stop staring, but when I looked back he was still focused on me, he hadn’t moved his eyes one little millimeter.
“And who’s this young lady?” Darius asked
“Danielle” I answered shyly.
“Danielle Kerr”. Fae added and told me to go forward.
“Hello, young lady” His voice almost made me smile, it was so charming. It made me feel like a twelve year old girl all over again. Some feeling I thought was long ago lost, came to life again that night; in a different way, though; an eager and cheerful way. I didn’t feel like I had to pretend, pretend I liked being there, and pretend I wanted the Legard siblings with me…
“Danielle” he continued saying “strong name, beautiful name. And what’s your talent beautiful young girl” Now that I liked, but unfortunately Fae interrupted.
“Let’s not talk about this right now Darius”
“Well, yes, dear. Let’s get cozy first and I’ll show you your rooms. Don’t you agree?”
We all agreed. If someone in that room would have been a mind reader, I would have been in trouble. For some reason I was the underdog, the dirty job girl. Sometimes I wished death would come along, but the next thought was painful. The next thought was always the one that told me that eternity wasn’t enough, that eternity was my curse. How long I had been waiting for some kind of redemption. But if I had to choose between my human life and my immortal life, I would have chosen the second one; less painful, less real and as I said before not human emotions not even the most remote memory of that dark long gone past.
