Welcome to a world where pokémon are everyday creatures. Some are common. Some are rare. The government that is in place in this land demands that people from each province and town train their companion pokémon for brutal, gory battles in Colosseums around the country. Despite that pokémon become injured during these battles no coin is necessary for these brave people to pay for the surgeries that their pokémon must go through. Instead of dying, their bodies shut down into a self-induced coma so that they may survive. Some of the lesser trained ones do unfortunately die. Pokémon aren't the same as the ones on the cards or in the shows. That is pure fiction. These are real species of beasts that roam the world. Some are more frightening than others. The show and the cards are government propaganda to make the life of a trainer seem more glamorous.
There are many climates in which these creatures dwell. They are more complex than "The Ice Types live in the tundra..." They belong to real ecosystems.
There is a government instituted quota or one to three pokémon per person. They are life companions and aren't bought or sold like domestic animals. The bond is unique and cannot be replaced.

Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.
