Odd Names - What do you think?

Almost every fantasy book you pick up will have half a dozen made up words in it, or thereabouts.

But am I the only one who finds overuse of this irritating? Not only does it irk me, but sometimes makes it hard to keep track of characters and places. Especially if I can't pronounce what I'm reading in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, I think made up words are essential to fantasy stories. But it's when the author takes it too far, with too many "zany" names that just makes a novel a bit less enjoyable for me.

...So what do you guys think?

Yeah, I do find the irritating since I can't exactly remember names all taht much. I don't really care if they do it as long as they give me the pronunciation (just don't give me that "It can be pronounce any way you want").

I don't do that since I usually mix two words together and then maybe use names from other countries xD even if it's fantasy/scifi.

I love different/quirky names for my characters. But not too odd that it doesn't mean anything.

Demseh's got a point though.

I'm usually okay, as long as there's not too many names to remember. But for some reason if they all have the apostrophe thing going on (like "Gn'ash" or something) it makes it harder to remember.
