You're dirt poor. Being a newsie only brings you a dime a day and a few black eyes. For fun, you and your friends play poker, card games, gamble at horse racetracks, and go see the "flickers" or movies. The newsies in Manhattan take in the physically handicapped and younger kids, to teach them to live in New York. The toughest part of the city is Brooklyn.
You're job is selling newspapers for the New York World, owned by Joseph Pulitzer. You buy two for a penny, and sell them to the public at a panny a paper, or "pape" as you would call it. You can pretty much do whatever you want; smoke, drink, fight others in the streets, so long as the cops don't catch you. If you are caught, you will be sent to the Refuge, like an early juvee. This place is described as hell on earth. The only thing that you have to do is sell your papers, not get arrested, and listen to the leader of Manhattan.
Note: The newsies who lie, cheat, and fight are often the ones who thrive the most. The tougher you are, the more feared you are, the better your life will be.
