This is a poem I wrote in response to the House on Mango Street... so it might make more sense if you have read the book. Like I kind of just took phrases from the book and put them all together. I'm mostly just playing around stylistically, though...

And so she spent her life
By the window
Waiting
Hope
Under the streetlight
Somewhere
When will the star fall?
I know
What the trees teach
Keep
Keep
Keeping
The mice away
And
The fathers
The belt
The shoes
The ugly
But
I am strong
Big
invisible
Not a daughter
Not ready
Not Now
Again
By the window
Waiting

For the island
But the only thing here
Is papaya and coconut
All I see
Is
Dancing
and Skinnysecret Trees
All I see
Magazinesbookslies
Liar a hundredthousandmillion times
I don’t want to see
that
I want to be home
Not by the window
"I am still so naive;
I know pretty much what I like and dislike;
But please, don't ask me who I am. A passionate, fragmentary girl, maybe?

hey,
I haven't read the book but I like it.
What the trees teach
Keep
Keep

Maybe if there was one less keep it might sound better but, you can keep it if you think it sounds better.
And so she spent her life
By the window
Waiting
Hope
Under the streetlight
Somewhere
When will the star fall?

this is my favorite part. It reminds me of a conversation I had with my best friend :)

keep writing,
Tash

Wow... I haven't read the book either but I liked it too! It is good! And interesting. Personally im not the biggest fan of that style, but I thought you did a good job of utilising it! It seemed like it skipped themes a little bit to me, but then again i haven't read the book so I know pretty much nothing. Like one part that seemed to skip themes was

I don't really understand why it goes from mice staying away to fathers and belts and shoes. But, I believe that you understand why it did that, so I'm not gonna keep going on it. I actually liked the first part as well, the part that reads

I felt like that was something everyone feels at some point of their life and that you captured that really well.
Good job!

Hey Talkingbird :) I've read the book, and I think the theme you having going on here goes along with it. The whole feeling of wanting to leave is expressed in the first part. Now, I read this book two years ago, and I can't quite remember everything that happens, but I think I remember the basic story!

The way you made this poem is really creative. I remember reading somewhere that Stanley Kubrick used a method sort of like this. He had the screenplay for the movie, and then he used to cut up the parts and rearrange the movie, much like you did here. Maybe that was Quentin Tarantino... Maybe both! Haha. But finally, this inspired me to try out this method! Keep it up :)

You are beautiful because you let yourself feel, and that is a brave thing indeed.
