A common word
A known word
But only those
Who have felt its touch
Truly understand
The pain
It’s a cage
Or window
That’s been shut
For eternity
Hiding its captives
From the beauty
From life
It holds despair in one hand
And agony in the other
It wears joy
But keeps it just out of reach
Creating
Unbearable longing
And unbreakable hopelessness
But there is a light
At the end of every tunnel
For even loneliness
Cannot hide
Forever
This light is unconditional
It gives freely
To all who seek it
But that is the key
It is not given
It must be found
You must choose it
Choose to let it
Light up your life
And fill your soul
With love
Find the light
Let it fill your soul
For love
Can ignite the stars

I originally intended this to be a dark poem, but I kind of took it elsewhere. The last few lines have some religious significance for me.
