I could scarcely breathe, were they telling me the truth or just taking advantage of my niavity? It was amazing how much I didn't know or remember. I think that the notion of not being able to rememeber that the poor heart broken girl who had entered my room earlier was my girlfriend, was what made the realization hit me so hard. How could someone, who was apparently so close and dear to me, escape my memory so completely?
I suddenly became very frusterated, I wanted to punch something. I felt so weak, so vunerable because I was in a world where everyone knew the things about me that I didn't, It was unnerving really.
"Tell me about her," I whispered
Rachel gave me a look of pity, "I would, but it wouldn't be the same, hun. You'll need to rediscover her on yourself. I can't reform the relationship between the two of you for you. That's something you'll need to do on your own. I'm sure she's willing if you are."
"But what if she's not?" I said quietly. "She didn't even tell me she was my girlfriend."
"She probably thought you would say she was crazy man. I mean considerin' the looks you gave your mom when she came in here." said Peter.
"You guys were watching me?!?" I asked in suprise.
"Oh yeah, we've been here the whole time, well, in exception to when Em came to see you, Peter decided he absolutely needed to have some of the hospital's frozen yogurt so we went to get some."
"I must have really good friends if they are willing to stay with me at the hospital for that long."
"Nah," Peter laughed, "I'm here cause yo' nurse is a BABE!"
Rachel rolled her eyes and flipped her hair over her shoulder. "Oh brother, well we'd better get going. Peter here has a football game tonight and I have to cheer so we'll see you later Jake."
"Bye," I muttered absently.
I tried to piece together my past from what I had learned that day. My mom looked worried about me so she must have cared about me at least a little. That was a relief. I wasn't so sure about the rest of my family. So far they hadn't made any attempt to come and see me. I had some really careing friends who had to be pretty popular seeing as they were both in the top status quo sports for high school. Did that mean I was popular too? Was I part of a sports team. What was I good at? What did I like? And besides all that, I apparently had a super hot girlfriend who cared enough about me to come visit me in a hospital when I was sure I looked like a train wreck.
The more I tried to remeber things, the more frusterated I got. It was like trying to remember a song you've never heard. I came up completely blank. I would make up ideas in my mind about who I was and I could make up some memories, but that was even more frusterating.
I think I might have yelled if someone hadn't knocked on my door.
"Come in," I said more harshly then I intended.
It was the old man. He plodded in, gave me a nod and slowly sank into one of the plastic chairs that lined the wall. His head fell forward and I instantly heard snoring. Why was he back in here? He didn't know me, why did he make it his business to monitor me all the time? And he even left the door open!
Suddenly I found it most important that I get up and shut the door,to take control of something. I slowly lifted the crispy white sheets off of my body and moved my legs to the side of the bed. The leg with the cast was slightly cumbersome, but I didn't care. I was going to do this. I grabbed the railing on the bed and stood up as slowly as possible, careful not to put too much weight on the leg that was broken. I became very dizzy and I suddenly noticed a throbbing in my head. Still I was determined.
I limped my way to the door and I would have made it if I had remembered I was attached to an iv and hadn't tripped over the cord. It wasn't too painful of a fall, I think my bandages cushioned most of it, but nonetheless I still blacked out temporarily. I opened my eyes to see Emily standing above me.
"JAKE!" She cried. "Are you okay? What happened?"
By now the old man was awake, "I'll go tell the nurses you're alright," He growled angrily in his impossibly deep voice.
Emily looked at me with concern...Then suddenly I had an image flash in my mind of her looking at me in the same way only it was dark and there were lights flashing and I saw a twisted bike on the ground behind her....
