Spoiler
it's definitely been a while since I posted... mostly because this is the boring part of the novel... all setting it up, so if you can, just bear with me for a while. You'll see, it'll get more exciting as we go :)

The bell chimed as I walked into the store. The nice, old smell of dust, plastic and paper flooded my senses. Home. I walked to the counter and dumped my bag on the ground.

“Hello Kaylee,” Steve, the manager, exclaimed as his head popped up in the doorway of his office.

I smiled back at him as he rolled his chair back though the doorway. I heard papers ruffling and his loud sigh. I peeked in the adjacent room; Steve was doubled over a pile of papers, looking as if he would literally pull out his hair. He stole a hopeful glance at me. Steve had always had a problem with handling money, and was always seeking help. Tara, on the other hand, kept him always in line and organized, but it had been a couple of weeks since she had came in for work. She was very busy with school, I was told, so she couldn’t come in to help him out.

“What’s up?” I asked, coming over to him, peeking over his shoulder at the complicated math papers.

He simply looked at me, making this funny face. I laughed; I knew how he hated this part of his business. He absolutely loved having his own record store, if anything this was a childhood dream of his, but I doubted he ever thought about the whole technicality behind it. That might’ve been why he had hired Tara, Angie and myself as soon as we were old enough to understand all of the business side.

“When is Tara coming back?” He asked, and wiped his brow with his hand. Tiny beads of sweat were trickling from his receding hairline.

I shrugged apologetically. I had no idea what was happening with Tara, I didn’t see her all that much anymore. And, I was no good at these things either; I had stopped listening in math class long ago.

My heart skipped a beat when the phone rang loud in the enclosed office. That God-awful ring tone, it was always making me shiver when I heard it. I shuffled out of there fast and closed the door behind me as he answered with his business voice. I busied myself with putting away the CDs that were littering the counter, scurrying around with a tower of them in my arms. A loud clash resounded in the room when they all clattered to the ground, my body hitting the ground hard with them. My shoe had caught in one of the boxes lining the wall, tripping me and sending me flying forward. I sighed and started picking up the CDs around me. The last one I picked up was Paramore’s first album, All We Know Is Falling.

I remembered it had been the first album I had ever bought at this store, when I first walked in. At that time, it had been a nicer store, with lots and lots of variety and everyone came here. I remembered the curiosity that took over me when I passed in front, and begged my friend to make a little stop, just to take a look inside. The door had been wide open, with music and conversations streaming out, an invitation to my ears. I had been young and innocent, twelve years old at the most, but it had made a routine of coming in here at least once a week to get away from everything and just get lost in the endless rows of voices that needed to be heard.

Now, everyone bought online and the store wasn’t as popular; we were lucky to get ten costumers in a week. Sometimes I wondered if Steve ever thought of selling out the business before it was too late, before he lost everything.

I finished putting away the old albums in their place when I noticed a big cardboard box by the counter. I bent over it, inspecting the contents. It was full of albums and different band merch. I unrolled a poster that was poking up, examining the faces staring back at me. It read Take a Chance in big blocky-drippy letters with four good-looking guys standing close like they could take over the world together. One of them was back to back with a smaller girl that had some of his features.

The office door opened once again and Steve appeared cell phone in hand, seemingly engrossed in a text he was typing.

“Oh, these guys dropped by earlier,” he explained when he looked up. “They’ve recorded and are searching for someone to sell their stuff. They’ll be promoting the store at their gigs in exchange. Pretty nice guys too, real professional and all.” He smiled and pointed to the box, “We’ll have to figure out someplace to place all this soon, but now I have to leave for a while. You’ll be alright?”

I nodded and he proceeded to the door. I sighed, sinking in the swiveling chair behind the counter as the door chimed, and closed my eyes envisioning darkness, complete darkness around me.

When Tara showed up later, we set up some space for the band promo beside the cash counter, arranging the merch in the better way possible. She made a comment about how attractive the band members were but I just shrugged it off. There weren’t a lot of people that Tara thought weren’t attractive; those boys had the same good looks as any other band to me.

I didn’t stay long after my shift was supposedly finished, hurrying home, to my room and my loneliness.

Hello Truth. :)

Yes, this chapter was rather boring, but I'm sure you'll have some more exciting coming soon. ;) Transitional chapters are always good to make us understand the characters and their personality , and they keep the novel moving forward.

I don't think I have any nitpicks for you today though... Not like I do any other day either. ;)

There's only one thing I have to say... Take A Chance is one delicious bunch of guys! Hooray for imagination. ;) Screw Kaylee for not seeing their sexiness. No, I'm joking, I love Kaylee. :)

Keep writing!
