This is who we are
In death’s lonely kingdom
Gods no longer
Our immortality cut short
Does the stuffing of our hollow men
Our straw men
Litter the valley of dying souls
Of dreams lost and forgotten
Forever sequestered in the lonely blackness
Entombed in grand mausoleums
Of broken angels
And shattered cherubs?
Where is the flicker
Where is the fire
Where is the whispering in the wind?
This voice lacks emotion now
Are we ever going back?
To the twilight’s other kingdom?
Or do we live here forever
In this dusky silence
Pregnant with potential
Swelling with hope
With pain long buried
The dying stars are now fading
Is this a dream?
A fading memory in the faint gloom?
Is there a sadness and a smile
Are they lost in the towers and the wires?
Are there just a few more hours
Until we are again changing with fashion
Or do these words lead to dead ends
This is who we are
Our names are written on black paper with dead letters
And there is no longer any good left undone
We are withering flowers in the field of weeds
Dead
On the outside
And on the inside
Caught in the here-between
Not human but not immortal
Of that we have been stripped
Death has not slept in so long
No
Death has not slept at all
After all here we are
In death’s other kingdom
The eyes
They watch us
In this black gloom
Making the things in the night
Bump
As the black hands
The shadow hands of the dark
Reach for us
To drag us under
Like frightened children of the monster
The one that lives under the bed
Where are the sunshine and the clouds?
The brilliant azure sky
The tang of magic
As it coats your tongue
The childish ignorance and wonder
Where has that gone?
Have we lost that too?
Has that faded with the broken stars?
This is who we are
Destined to be evil
From the beginning
To the bitter end
Is that a whisper in the grass?
Silent as a snake
Slinking, slithering softly
Like sandpaper and silk
On this ocean avenue
This ocean like a fire
Crashing and booming on angry waves
Of our cries in vain
That echo on cove walls
Forever thrown back at us
Doomed to repeat
I am the one
Pray for me
I am here today
But gone tomorrow
A shape without from
Without color
A disaster
I am my disaster
And you don’t even care
Not even that you are going nowhere
Stop
Do you hear it?
The creaking of floorboards
The thumping of coming feet
The scratching on the doors
They have found us
Even as we hide in the murky shadows
Their hot breaths
Fill icy air
Stilling the frantic beating of your heart
Thump
Thump
Thump
The whisper of crushed velvet
A portrait in black
Of a fear so eternal that it emanates that hopelessness
Do you smell it?
The dissolve and the decay
The rotting of the dying
Of the dead
Of us
Can you see the light?
Or are the things in the dark still holding you
There is nothing left for me
The eyes are watching again
Blinking in the opaque
Licking chops that are slathering
With stringed pearls of saliva
The craving for our flesh
Of our souls
How can I reverse my curse?
Of a withered past and a blurry future
Where is the emotion
Where is the reality
There is no time here
In death’s other kingdom
Only the waiting hell
Of panic and fear
Of hate
Of desolation
I don’t want to fade away
How do I get out?
Where is my god to hear my prayers?
Have they fallen on deaf ears?
This is who we are
Lost and shaken children
Crying for a mother that won’t come
The quiet sobbing in the oblivion of this existence
Hush
There is a pitter-patter of rushing feet
On the broken glass of the damaged being
Tick tock
Tick tock
The pendulum swings
Again and again
Hush!
The rushing is more urgent now
There are hands that are clinging to me
Gripping tightly in hot terror
Inaudible screams lost in the other dimensions
As the pounding on the thin door
Grows louder
Louder
Louder
Will Orpheus come to fetch me from the black?
To save me from this
The distorted existence of this life
There is no life
Vanity and greed
Block this door
Brick by boring brick
The ripped wings of the butterflies
Fluttering wings
Brilliant colors in the inky gloom
We shout to the ceiling
But we are a broken machine
A crippled machine
This who we are
A motors extra parts
Can someone salvage my heart?
Can someone stop this war?
Can the whispers be silenced?
Or are we just piles of gears
Sleeping awake now
Because I was meant to live
We were meant to live
Save me
And I will tell you I am sorry
But my serpents tongue flickers with words
Unspoken
Unheard
Over the thousand years that I am gone
Call my name
Our name
Until there are no more screams
In blood of your pitch black heart
This is who we are
I have read this story a million times
Not the pretty version
Where there is a hero
A saved damsel from her distress
And a happy ending
No
The story I have read
Is of death and destruction
Of life’s tragic end
Of a bloody gun on the floor
We are death’s toy soldiers
In his employ to remain
In death
And in life
We were told a beautiful lie
Of crimson words
Help us find a way to carry on
From this war
This rapture
This is who we are
This is who I am
Lost
Dead
In death’s twilight kingdom
This who we are
We are
After all
The human race

Howdy there!

This is very very good and the use of enjambment was great, however just a few things.

Firstly this is very long, possibly it drags on for a little too long so you may want to consider cutting it down a little, or splitting it up into stanza's?

Secondly, there was no use of punctuation what so ever, which I think this poem needed in order to flow properly as, as a reader I had no idea as to when to pause, or when the end of the sentence was. This like the above point could be helped by splitting the poem into stanza's!

Overall good job, well done!

wow! really amazing poem! It is incredable that you were able to write such a long poem that keeps you reading and drawn to what you are abouit to say next... becarful though with these long poems that you don't forget the topic of the poem. I've noticed once or twice that you swtched to something else that would confuse a reader until they read the rest. But other than that keep up the excellent work!

Thanks the for the advice. It was really helpful. And I will work on fixing it.

Sometimes I'm terrified of my heart; of its constant hunger for whatever it is it wants. The way it stops and starts.
