My real name is actually Susannah but I've been calling myself Sannah since I was one or two... and that is what this is about. My frustrations of role call on the first day of school(or if we have a sub)!!!

My Name

Susannah
Who is that?
Not me, that's for sure
Maybe she's the twin I never met
I know she resides somewhere within me
But she's so hard to reach,
Always just above my horizon,
It's like she doesn't exist
But some people seem to think that she does
Relatives call me that
Anger seethes inside when they do
Who is this Susannah,
Trying to be me?
I've been Sannah all of my life
Yet people mistake me for her
She can't just come in out of nowhere,
Take credit for what I do,
Think my thoughts,
Write my words,
And pretend their hers
Because it's not Susannah's life I'm living
It's Sannah's life, can't anybody see that?
As the name is called,
I look over my shoulder
As does everybody else
Before I realize
That Susannah is
Me

Can I just start by saying Sannah is an awesome name :P
So I liked this poem, it touched me because you talk about how you don't feel this person is you, how you are constantly trying to prove you're somone else.
I also liked your bravery for writing a poem without rhyming, that is always hard to do.
Just try to make sure you have a rythym going all the way through, so it doesn't turn into a short story passage. Also, try not to repeat your ideas, use new words, imaging etc. Keep it fresh all the way through :)
Please keep writing!

I really liked this poem! I think it flowed very well and it had just the right amount of emotion! Great job! Keep it up :)

Thank you for the feedback! :) I was afraid nobody would even bother reading it... "I also liked your bravery for writing a poem without rhyming" Honestly, I doubt I could rhyme to save my life. I lack the skill to rhyme and seriously envy anybody who can incorporate rhyming in their poetry. When I rhyme, I also feel like I'm locking myself in a cage and the bars are only a half inch apart each... My brain just overloads when you add the extra stress of rhyming. Again, thank you both for the feedback.

Hi.. First off, Welcome to YWS!! Now for the poem... It was very well written.. What I appretiate mainly in this poem of yours is the concept... It was a nice one.. It really is very irritating when someone calls you with a name you don't really like.. and yeah I would too say that 'Sannah' is better than 'Susannah'.... Very nicely written poem...

Ha. This poem made me laugh, but in a good way. To me this poem was light-hearted, and playful, yet very well written. I understand the frustration with names and identity very well, perhaps too well. That is why I enjoyed this poem. It takes a very serious theme, and creates an atmosphere in which the reader thinks, but is not intimidated. Good job.

I really like this. It's something I'm sure many people who go by nicknames or have people mispronounce their names often can relate to. You did a good job of capturing this frustration and anger at being called something you're not. Great job!

I really liked this poem!!! It was definitely something i'll remember. Sometimes i feel the same way, almost as if i'm living inside another persons body and the title that everyone gives me is not my own. I think everyone kind of goes through an identity crisis but that's just part of the journey :) Looking forward to reading some more of your work

Sannah.

This was an interesting poem. It was unusual, and it gives a good sense of how you feel about your name.

Why do you capitalize every beginning line? Is there a reason for the capitalization? It is distracting.

You say Susannah is hard to reach, implying that you've tried. Yet most of the poem you spend lamenting the existence of this Susannah. Why would you want to reach her, in this case? This stood out to me.

I agree. Who is this Savannah of which you speak???
Great poetry - I love the emotion behind it! It really capitalizes on the importance of a name.
I'm going to have to post something like that soon....

About what PurifyingFire said... Susannah follows Sannah like a shadow but it is really Susannah who overshadows Sannah no matter how hard she tries or what she does. Sannah just wants to be important as Susannah is to other people. That's why she reaches out to her, so she can try to be something to somebody. But she discovers she hates that cheater. Ranger51, just so you know, you put Savannah (I had an art teacher who mistook my name with Savannah several eyes). I am debating on whether to rewrite it or not because I realize there is a lot I could've added now that I read over it a few times. And everybody, thank you for the feedback!

I really liked the way you described the duality of your name. Keep up the good work!

I like how the poem had the name thing going on through out the whole thing. Sometimes that is hard to do. And Sannah is an AWESOME name. My name is a causal name, Selena. But yours say something its got that ring. :)
Awesome poem though!
