So what is Linguistics? It's the study of human language. That does not mean that one has to know very many languages to study it. There are people who just study English. So what exactly does one study? One studies the structure of language. So one studies things like syntax-sentence structure, morphology-word structure and phonology-the sounds of language. This might overlap a little with etymology, but etymology is more of the study of word roots and how they changed over time. Linguistics study the structure of words.
