Second half of the latest chapter. Not my best, but hopefully not my worst. Also, this is all I've got written of HTBD so far; I don't know what happens next and I'm kind of stuck. I might also be possibly distracted by a zombie novel that's been taking up a lot of my time. Anyway, thanks in advance for any reviews!

Quick recap: Chance, Jot, and Ryder have made a deal with Daria to use her horses under the condition that she joins them on their quest. They're just now heading out to the stables.

Here There Be Dragons

Chapter Five, part two

Chance picked up the pack and settled it on his back; I was tempted to speak to him, but kept quiet. Somehow, I had a feeling that Daria would manage to hear me.
He and Ryder followed Daria out the house and into the stable. Remembering the response I had gotten from the previous equines we’d met, I made sure to keep my breathing quiet. The stable was nicer on the inside than out; there were four horses in their own stalls, all of them sleek, powerful animals that were a far cry from the ones before.
Also in the stable was the young woman; she seemed to be cleaning a saddle. She was sitting on an overturned wooden trough at the end of the building, scrubbing industriously away at the leather. She glanced up as we entered; I felt Chance immediately stiffen, and I saw his cheeks flaming up again. The girl didn’t even notice; her attention was on Daria.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
“We’re working on a deal,” Daria replied.
“And?”
“Is that saddle clean yet, Jade?” Daria said tartly.
I could almost put Chance’s thoughts into words: Jade. What a pretty name. Fits her eyes—so green. Look at the way her hair covers her shoulders…look at the way she bites her lip as she focuses on the saddle…she wouldn’t make much of a meal, but she looks more robust than Chance, at least… (Well, Chance’s supposed imaginings kind of gave way to my own for a moment.)
“So these are the horses,” Daria said, jolting my attention back to the proceedings. “If they are to your liking, then I will consider our bargain closed.”
Chance stepped up to one; it was a gleaming chestnut, stocky and strong, with inquisitive eyes. The horse’s ears pricked up as Chance reached his hand out; I started to slowly slide down in the pack, hoping Daria wouldn’t notice the pack’s flap inching down.
Since I successfully managed to hunker down into the pack completely, I never saw what Chance did, but he seemed to find the horses all to his liking, for the next thing I heard was him saying, “They all seem to be fine steeds. Our bargain will take place.”
“Very well then,” Daria said, sounding not in the least pleased that she had gotten her way. “Come outside and we shall discuss the particulars.”
As I heard Daria’s firm stride leaving the stable, and Ryder following, I risked a peek out again. Chance was lingering, pretending to give one of the horses a friendly pat, but I saw his wide blue orbs swiveling towards the end of the stable, where Jade had stopped cleaning and was watching.
“What is this bargain you spoke of?” she asked. I had to give her credit for her directness.
Chance seemed half elated and half terrified that he was talking to her—actually talking! Imagine!
“Erm, well, I need to get to Rale, to attend to some business, and I needed some horses.”
I saw the girl nod expectantly, waiting for more.
“Your mother said—”
“She’s not my mother.”
“Oh?” Chance blinked, unsure of how to proceed. “Er, sorry, I just assumed—”
“Everyone does, do not worry,” Jade said sweetly, giving Chance a smile that meant, I can see you’re an idiot, so I’m just going to be very nice to you because you can’t understand half the things I say. (That was my interpretation of it, anyway).
I think the boy was close to swooning, so I pricked his back through the pack with one of my claws. He jumped with a little cry, and one of the horses tossed its head up in surprise.
“We need to talk,” I breathed into Chance’s ear.
He cleared his throat and said gallantly to Jade, “I’m sorry, but I should be getting out to speak with…er, Daria.”
She rose, setting the saddle onto the trough. “I’ll accompany you.”
Now, who was Chance to argue with that? They walked side-by-side out of the stable, joining Daria and Ryder outside.
“We were just discussing the best and quickest route to Rale,” Daria said as we approached. “And we have agreed that we shall have to cut across the Fells, go through the Forest, and then cross the Mountains at a little pass that will lead us directly to Rale.”
Chance nodded. “That sounds good,” he said.
Beside us, I saw Jade fold her arms. “Why do you say ‘we,’ Daria?”
“I am accompanying them, to ensure the safety and return of my horses.” I detected a hint of a challenge, as if Daria knew what was coming.
Jade raised an eyebrow. “And I am coming, too?”
I felt Chance’s heart give a little leap and start pumping away with gusto. I huffed to myself; this was getting too out of hand.
As Daria pulled Jade away to explain to her that this was going to be a tough journey, full of dangers and much more, blah blah, I took the opportunity to whisper to Chance, “We need to talk!”
“Why?” he breathed without moving his mouth.
“Because I signed up for a quick rescue mission, not a full-blown traveling party!”
“We need them.”
“Ooh, sure. Jade is going to provide such expertise, such help! She can’t even lift a sword; look at those puny little arms.”
“They’re not puny. They’re…delicate.”
I snorted softly. Ryder was watching us out of the corner of his eye, but wisely staying silent, while Daria and Jade were still heatedly discussing whether Jade could come or not.
“Besides,” I added into Chance’s ear, “they don’t even know about me.”
He shifted from one foot to another. “Well…I’ll tell them.”
“I thought you didn’t want anyone to know about me.”
“Well I don’t have much choice, do I?”
By that time, Jade had successfully convinced Daria that she was coming; I wondered just what the nature of their relationship was. Jade had enough respect for Daria to obey her, yet also there was a brimming rebelliousness that clashed with her position.
Daria turned to Chance with a sigh. “Sir, if it is all right with you, my protégé Jade would like to accompany us. I have been training her very well in the art of survival, and I feel she would be a boon to our company.”
Chance was all barely-contained eagerness. “Oh! Of course, I am quite sure Jade will be a pleasure to have along.”
Jade smiled sweetly at Chance, and I felt the boy’s breath get caught up somewhere in his throat.
I coughed loudly; Jade’s smile turned to a look of guarded alarm. Since Chance’s mouth was tightly sealed, the cough seemed to come from nowhere.
“Um, there’s one more thing I have to tell you,” Chance said hastily to Daria. She looked completely unperturbed, as if she had been waiting for this all along.
“You see, I have enlisted the help of another creature—”
“I already know about Ryder,” Daria said evenly. Jade tittered, Ryder huffed; it took a little longer for Chance to realize she was joking. Maybe.
Erring on the safe side, he made a little choking sound that could have been taken for a laugh or for the fact that he was gagging. “Er, well, I’ve got a creature in my pack here, who’s a little…unorthodox on journeys such as these.”
Daria raised an eyebrow perfectly. She didn’t say a word, and it was very effective. Chance hurried on.
“And even though it seems like he will be a ferocious creature, I assure you he’s perfectly safe and will not harm you.”
Jade’s green eyes widened; Daria looked unimpressed. Chance slid the pack off and opened the flap.
Instantly, I leapt out, turning visible, with a fantastic roar and widening of my wings. Jade jumped back a little, but Daria stayed where she was. It was then that I noticed that I was looking up at them, and realized I had forgotten to grow.
“Damn! It was going to be a fine presentation, just perfect!” I huffed and folded my wings in, plunking down disconsolately on the ground.
“A dragon. Most interesting, Sir Chance,” Daria said with a note of faint impression.
Jade crouched down to look at me. “I thought they were bigger,” she said with a trace of scorn. “This one doesn’t look too dangerous.”
I think Chance was starting to step forward, opening his mouth to say something. But I had already leapt behind Jade, grown to full size, and had twined my tail around her, pinning her arms to her side.
Daria stepped forward, eyes wide, while Ryder whimpered, no doubt remembering his own experience with me.
I lowered my head to Jade’s shocked face and purred pleasantly, “Not dangerous? Why, little girl, how very…naïve of you. Never,” I tightened my tail around her and she gasped, “insult a dragon like that. Or you may find yourself inside one.”
“Jot, put her down,” Chance commanded in a surprisingly firm tone. I glanced at him; he had a steely gaze in those blue buggers, and I sighed.
“Here, have her.” In a nice little flick of my tail, I unwrapped her and gave her a shove towards Chance, who clumsily caught her before she crashed to the ground. He held on to her a little longer than necessary, to make sure she was all properly balanced, before letting go and turning to me with a severe look.
“Jot, I want you to extend your promise from Ryder and myself to Jade and Daria.”
I yawned. “I know, I know. Yes, I promise not to harm or eat them.”
Jade eyed me carefully; I was a little disappointed to see a hint of curiosity and even eagerness in her gaze instead of pure, petrified terror.
“So,” Ryder said cheerfully in the ensuing silence, “when are we leaving?”

Here I am, very nicely not pointing out that I am once again first. *coughs*

Daughter, Jot's back! I laughed so much during this whole piece. Then, I quoted almost the whole thing to my sister who's sitting beside me. She might not even have to read this before commented. *ahem*

I have nothing bad to say about this. Couldn't find any mistakes. I'm pleased with where this is going and I loved what has happened. I loved Jot's interpretation of it all, and you blended action and humour nicely.

Bravo, ma fille! Tu as réussi un autre bon chapitre!

Raaaangaaaah! You posted more! Mum didn't bully you, did she? ;]

*Sniffs* So Tanya came first.. That's okay, I can let her have this one... She just so daymn fast.

Chance seemed half elated and half terrified that he was talking to her—actually talking! Imagine!
Haha, that actually made me laugh out loud. (:

cut across the Fells, go through the Forest, and then cross the Mountains at a little pass that will lead us directly to Rale.”
*Gets checklist ready for future chapters* Sounds like there's going to be ample opportunities for thrills and suspense.

Yeah, I'm just going through pointing out all the stuff that made me laugh... Pffft, me, helpful? Nahh...

So I realised I might quote the whole thing and stopped doing that. I don't know why you don't like this chapter, Ranger. It's progressing wonderfully, regained its fantastic humour, develops the new characters a little more and, well... Jot's more in this part... (:

The only thing I would point out is just how large is Jot? 'Cause when he grows to his "full" size, I'd image him filling the room - at least hitting the ceiling. And I hope Chance gets a handle on his crush, 'cause if he's constantly going to gazing at Jade with little hearts in his eyes, I might miss the sterner Chase we knew before hand... In other words, don't make the romance too overpowering, or this might turn from a fantasy/adventure novel to a romance... but these are only small things, because I'm trying to keep my review from: "I liked this, and this. Oooh! That as well, and, um, this..."

Keep 'em coming!
Your = Possession. Your shoes are so sweet!
You're = Omission. You're quite strange...

If you are confused about which to put, simply say in your mind "you are" and see if that fits the sentence. If not, you are looking for your.

Mum just did her usual bullying, in a nice way. ;)

Thanks for quoting that bit about the places they're going, actually -- I forgot to figure out names for those places! I think I have it highlighted in the actual document as a reminder for me to come back...I'm rambling. Okay.

The romance is something I'm struggling with. It always seems to take control of the story, which is something that drives me crazy. Don't worry, though, I've got my eye on it and will hopefully cut any romance that gets to be too much.

Thank you very much! :D

He he, luck number 4 8)

....*reads*....

All righty; no nit-picks, and all the funny parts have been quoted already..so, really, what's a girl to say?

Lol. But I'm glad Jot's sense of humour is back, I was seriously missing him :D
Um...I don't really have anything else to say. I was pretty sure, from the moment Chance was all lovey-dovey over Jade, that she'd be going with them....glad I was right ;)
On to the next chappy!!

I know, I know, I'm late... I just haven't had any chance to do any reviews! I hadn't even read it till today! Despicable me... :P

I really liked this (duh, do I have to mention it every single time?) and I loved that even more characters came in. I was starting to wonder where in Arty's name they'd get those horses. So now I'm relieved, though I didn't quite catch why the horses didn't panic. Was it just that Jot was in Chance's pack? Fine with me.

I understand why you got stuck here, I always tend to get stuck in my more elaborate stories as well, sometimes sooner sometimes later. Do you know at all what's going to happen? How does Rale look, where is Chance's sister, what is it going to take to get her back? Then of course the journey. I find them pretty hard to write, because it's so hard to describe them moving without anything happening, but you can't always have stuff happening. In a way you have it easier, because when Jot doesn't see or here something you don't have to write about it. Let him sleep for a while, or go hunt, if you don't want to talk about them talking to each other. How long are they going to be on the road? You could have Chance ask those questions before they take off. Then of course the romance (love it, by the way!). It's true, don't overdo it, but some comedian romantic scene here and there are great, especially by you.

So that's all I've got to say for now... Keep on writing, I would hate to lose Jot!

Hawkeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey, bwoooooiii. 8)

I had a lot of free time this afternoon, so I thought, why not check out Here There Be Dragons, eh? I've read all of the chapters you have posted, but I'm going to leave all comments and such in this one review. Get all my thoughts in one place, you know? Because of that, this review may be a weeny bit long... I hope you don't mind. I can't really say how helpful I'll be because I fail a little at reviewing these kind of things, but nonetheless, I will tyre to be useful.

Okay! So, I really like this novel, so far! Like I've said to you before, this isn't normally my kind of novel, but this is definitely an exception. I adore your characters (I'm a big fan of characterisation, you see), and I think you've done a great job of them. I'm sure you know me well enough to know that I like to have a bit of humour in life, so I'm really glad there's a lot of that in this novel. Another thing that you've done a brilliant job of is keeping things consistent. You know, your characters don't randomly change personalities, Jot's voice is consistent, and the overall feel of the story remains the same. Consistency in novels is something loads of people, especially me, struggle with. I'm jealous. ;)

Hmmmm... H'okay, critiques. Before I begin, please note that some of these critiques are based on my own personal opinion, so it's totally fine if you don't agree with them or whatever. I mean, people are allowed to have different opinions, right?

After reading the plot synopsis thing on the novel (as in this:http://www.youngwriterssociety.com/novel.php?id=1055), I had to stop and think for a bit. The main idea of what you have written is that dragons and humans are basically enemies. Because of that, I get the idea that you want it to be really surprising that a dragon agreed to go on a quest with a human, but it didn't seem that weird to me... not as unusual as I think it's supposed to be. *Sucks at explaining... as you can see*. Basically, I don't think the idea of a human and a dragon working together seems unusual enough to me right now.

I think it's because the first chapter went straight into the whole Jot and Chance meeting. I mean, we didn't really get an idea of life before that. You had Jot briefly mention how humans always feared dragons, how humans went on quests to slay dragons to save fair maidens or whatever e.t.c. but that was it really. You just told us about these things. Because I didn't really see any of this, Chance and Jot working together never really struck me as omgish when Chance requested Jot's help, or when Jot agreed to it. As for this critique as a whole though, it's one of those opinion based ones, so if you disagree completely, or just generally don't understand it (that would be understandable), that's entirely cool.

On a similar kind of note, I think Jot agreed to go on the quest a bit too easily for my liking. I am a picky person, and this might just be that side of me coming out, but I think you could have maybe had Jot a bit less willing about it all. The only real reason he agreed to it was because he wanted the steel. Okay, the steel is pretty amazing to him, but would it really be enough to convince Jot to go on a quest with a human? (which is apparently extremely odd anyway) You obviously had thoughts of Jot wanting to eat Chance and such, but I don't know... he just gave in too easily for my liking. Why would Jot trust Chance anyway? How does he know that Chance would even give him the steel? Couldn't Jot have found steel on his own? Once again, this is more of a picky, based on opinion critique, so don't feel too bothered by it if you disagree or whatever.

Finally, my last critique is something that isn't entirely opinion based. Yay! :P Basically, I couldn't help but notice that you use a rather lot of dialogue. I've spotted this in your writing before actually. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with lots of dialogue, especially when it's as amusing as yours is, but at times, I think it can be a bit too chunky. There's not much I can really say or suggest for this because it is only a minor thing. What I could suggest, I guess, is that maybe instead of having some of the dialogue as dialogue, you can have it as thoughts or something (Jot's dialogue anyway). You can then express those thoughts further, and then they can maybe progress into descriptions or actions e.t.c. That's a bit of a dodgy suggestion, but I do think you should at least maybe watch out for some long chunks of dialogue.

Phew... okay. To be honest, I haven't exactly been helpful... My first two critiques were a little dodgy, but I hope you can at least bring out one bit of help from this review. Also, I know I probably sound pretty harsh as well, but honestly, I really do like this novel. Are you still stuck with what to do with it next? If you are, try not to stress out about that. Just leave it for a while, let your thoughts settle, then come back to it. Hopefully, the part of your brain that controls Here There Be Dragons will then be nice and fresh. But make sure you post the next part soon. Before I kill you.

Keep writing,

xoxo Skins

If this is who I think it is... then... oh goodness, what have I done?! D:

Anyhow, another good chapter. I'm not sure I even need to say that anymore, but I just can't help it. This novel is so much fun! (Plus, I'm getting lots of pandapoints for us by reviewing every chapter, aren't I? Added bonus!) I always look forward to the next chapter, even if I don't look forward to reviewing it--because I feel like I can never find anything helpful to say. This genre is hard to critique, and anything done really well is hard to critique, so this genre done really well certainly doesn't make for easy critiquing. But I'll do my best.

Firstly, as for the whole romance thing: I agree that you shouldn't make it go overboard. Sure, Chance isn't exactly swooning all over the place, and when Jot threatened Jade we saw a tougher side of Chance that was actually pretty refreshing, I think. The only problem I see is that you have a tendency to exaggerate things--that's part of what makes the writing so funny--and if you exaggerate the romance too much it could get... just... kind of stupid. Not that I think it will or anything, of course! Actually, part of me expects Jade to turn out being kind of fierce underneath and ending up scaring the heck out of Chance at some point--putting him in his place, you know?

Actually, she's looking like she's got the makings for an interesting character. For on thing, she grew up (or at least lives) with Daria--that would make anyone interesting, right? For another thing, I'm pretty sure she's an orphan based on her response to Chance's comment about Daria being her mother. Plus, she's not afraid of Jot even though he's a dragon and even though he threatened her. But I have to say, I only saw these things about her after thinking about it for a while. On first glance, she didn't seem that interesting at all. I think this is because Jot doesn't really seem to have much of an opinion about her. Since it's from his perspective, unless he has something to say about her, she ends up feeling kind of flat. Right now, all I know about her is that Chance likes her, and that she might like Chance (though I'm not sure about the latter). I suggest you try and make a little stronger first impression with her--especially because Chance is so taken with her, I'd think Jot would have some more opinions about her.

Something that's been confusing me for a while is how Jot can see Chance's face when he's in the pack. I imagine the pack to be on Chance's back, so in order for Jot to see it, he'd have to twist around, right? Maybe I'm getting overly technical, but it's something I wonder about every time you mention the "buggy blue eyes." ^_^

Something else that I've been wondering about is why Ryder needs to come along at all. He's just coming to be a guide, right? But it seems to me that Daria has a good enough sense of the surroundings to be a guide. Since she's in control of the whole situation, and since she obviously doesn't get along with Ryder all that well, why would she allow him to come? Maybe I'm missing something, but that seems a little off to me.

Well, I think I'll stop this useless ramble right here. But don't worry, I'll start it up again on the next chapter.
