He looked out at the beach,
she sat safely within his reach.
He spoke to the three,
who gazed at him happily.

His two sons ran out onto the shore,
they never let his life become a bore.
They laughed and played,
As the sunset slowly waned.

He looked up at the sky,
savoring all its beauty;
he laughed at this undying simplicity.
When suddenly his wife's cry,
brought him back into reality.

He looked down and saw the scene,
his wife's face now a blank screen.
Staring lost at the little shoes in the wet sand,
they could no longer see his son's hand.

He screamed his son's name,
yet his search was in vain.
His son pointed to where he had seen him last,
a sandy beach, where waves came down in crashing blasts.

His heart was on a roller coaster ride!
His son. . .His sun. . .
Had been swallowed by the Crushing Tide!

This was one of the first poems i ever wrote. I wrote this when I was 13 for a relative who lost one of his sons. the poem has been unchanged since then. i posted this so that people my help me analyze how my writing has changed over the years

Dramatic.

What an ass of a father!

I liked it because ... well... I dont really know... Ill get back to you on that one.

Not bad for thirteen..
But now that you grown up, how about reading it again and shortening a few of those lines.

Re-work the rhyme scheme of stanza 3. The last line of the penultimate stanza reads "the hand". Change "the" to "his". In the same stanza, correct the repetition of the word blankly.

Anyway, I'm sure you write better now than you did at 13, so looking forward to a new poem.

Hi there, Lavvi in to review.

Yeah, this was okay. I find the rhyme scheme a little juvenile, but then that might be just me. You run into some inconsistency with lines in stanzas which kind of ruins it a bit.

It's most definitely a little sad, and I liked the way it ended. The title is very suitable in many ways, perhaps literally, metaphorically et cetera. There was a mishap with one part of the rhythm: stanza two, second line. It just doesn't quite fit. That stanza also happens to be the inconsistent stanza. It might help to remove one line :)

Yours,
Lavvi

I really like the poem. The imagery in the poem is interesting such as

He looked down and saw the scene,
his wife's face was now a blank screen.
Staring blankly at the little shoes in the wet sand,
they could no longer see the hand.

this part is really interesting. I liked the end-rhymes and the cross-rhyme in the third verse. I even liked the variation in the structure of the poem. I also liked the change in tone from pleasant to horrifying. I really don't know what you can improve on because this is a well-written poem.

Not bad. Not my favorite, (personal taste) but it's OK.

TolyVilapoo wrote:He looked out at the beach,
she sat safely within his reach.
He spoke to the three,
who gazed smiling at him happily. This line has two many syllables. Try reading it aloud. Maybe it's just me, but you could try "who gazed at him happily" or "who smiled at him happily". Dunno...

His two sons ran out onto the shore,
they let his life become a bore.
They laughed and played,
As the sunset waned.

He looked up at the sky,
savoring all its beauty;
he laughed at this undying simplicity.
When suddenly his wife's cry,
brought him back into reality. Maybe try "to" instead of "into"?

He looked down and saw the scene,
his wife's face was now a blank screen. Take out the "was"
Staring blankly at the little shoes in the wet sand,
they could no longer see the hand. The hand? What hand? What are you talking about? And why wasn't his wife WATCHING them, since he obviously wasn't?

His heart was on a roller coaster ride!
His son. . .His sun. . .
Had been swallowed by the Crushing Tide! I like this last line, but what happened to the other son? He drowned too? Confused here!

Interesting, I have to say, I got mad at the dad, but you can't help feeling sorry for him at the end. Good job.

Hello, it's me again! :) I noticed you edited the poem. I think it still sounds great. I still really like the details, especially the details you just added. As an example,

"He screamed his son's name,
yet his search was in vain.
His son pointed to where he had seen him last,
a sandy beach, where waves came down in crahing blasts."

I just really like these details. However, you wrote "crahing" instead of crashing, so you might want to fix that, I think. Still talking about the example I put above, I noticed you still kept with the end-rhymes, which is fantastic. You still did a great job! I definitely think you should keep writing poetry!
