Hello and welcome to my humble little post. I am a fledgling novelist currently working on my first piece of work over 1000 words that I actually remember to finish. I am an English Lit student so it contains a plethora of pretentious literary allusions, my thinking going something like this: Joyce was obsessed with Hamlet; I like Hamlet; If I make myself like Hamlet as much as Joyce I shall write great fiction. And so here I am ten thousand words in with two or so Hamlet references. Perhaps not up to Joycian standards but I always liked Marlowe better.
I took my pen name through the “Wikipedia-names-you-band” method of clicking random article. I came upon “Major characters in the works of Madeleine L'Engle” and so I pinched her last name. But I think it is just a working title for me. The working title for my novel is Red, but I have grown to quite like it and if you read any of it I hope you agree it is even partially suitable.
Writing this I have been reading Faustus, Edward II and Ulysses so they have most notably directly impacted on it. Also a lecture I had on the narrative/drama divide in The Winter's Tale and Way of the World heavily influenced the opening. Ulysses affected it the most stylistically with a stream of consciousness (I know Ulysses isn't and Joyce did not use the term but pah! What is he going to do?) along with a traditional narrator but I hope the style of narration will remain fresh by playing with the divide and dominance of both voices.
