Watched "Howl", got thinking about obsenity, censorships, all that jazz, wrote this, realized it had no profanity, felt impressed, had a Coke, went to bed. Tell me if it's worth anything, will you?
I don’t know for certain whether it’s actually possible for something to be legitimately obscene to the world. For the most part, we have stereotypes and commonalities in the development in our population; lessons to be taught and common sense to push forward. But at a certain point, people reach a point where they’re pulled towards the darker underbelly of the world they’re lived in, created out of what we can only identify as a combination of evil and villainy. People spend careers trying to destroy that hellish spawn, by force and by word of mouth, and those who antagonize the criminals still manage to be accused by their own Orwellian allies of being obscene, nothing but violent, graphic, phallic, sexual imagery that doesn’t contribute to curing the prosecutable diseases of society any further. So the masterpieces and perspectives of the artists and writers and designers get thrown into the lightless, bottomless pit for the addicts, robbers, and murderers use as toilet paper, while the creators are jailed from home by the cages of the press and branded with heated burning logos on their foreheads to tell the people what they should be hearing, and what the creators don’t believe. It’s no different than banning glasses for letting people see things differently, be it fuzzier or clearer. All the creators just want to share what they see and want people to consider, and they want to do it with bigger words, cynical images, and other noticed averages in the society they think they’re living in, no matter how gory or erotic as they might be. They might be somewhat more radical, pushier, even stubborn compared to the nation’s parental units, but a utopia isn’t going to come from people being suppressed or shut down; it’s about the people asking for what they want through whatever form they think is most suitable. And until we all can ask without being afraid of branding irons and guillotines, we can’t have a universal obscenity.
