We met during Christmas.
At a party, you hosted
Taught me the intricacies
Of fine dining, of politics
Of grand old ladies
And esteemed old men.

You dumped me on your birthday.
Right after I bought you that really expensive present
The one with all the silver and gold
The jewelry that said for me
I love you.
Maybe I was moving too fast.
Maybe.

I heard all about how I was supposed to feel.
A void. A blackness in my heart.
A longing for something,
Something I'd never known.
That's what you said you wanted me to feel.
But, strangely enough
(because my life is always most bizarre)
I was thankful.

You see, at that party,
You dumped me before I could give you my gift.
And so, without missing a beat,
I went to the other side of the room.
I heard some crying over there,
And I comforted as best I could,
With gifts of silver and gold.
Cold metal did what words could not.

And now, two years later,
We're getting married.
So thanks for that.
Thank you for yelling,
For screaming about little things,
For berating me about my expectations
And other minor details.
It was how I met your sister.

NOTE
Um, wow. I intended this to be a short little thing, but it ran away from me. There's just something irresistible about stories ending with dating her sister. Bonus points if they end up married. That's all for now!
When in doubt...obfuscate!

I really loved your poem I was interested the whole time especially when he started to thank her for breaking up with them. At first I felt really bad for him and then I was happy that it worked out for the better. I really loved the flow of this poem it was just right. I think you are an amazing writer. Keep up the good work!

I love the sudden twist between the second to last and last stanza. It's sort of mopey and then turns vengeful. I would really like it though if you would replace a few words and perhaps put more emotion into it. It's a little dry at parts, but overall very good.

Hey there.
First of all, I'd like to say that this is the first piece I've read since stepping back into YWS today after months.
And it's good. :)

So, here's my thanks. (Erm, if I could insert an emoticon/animated smiley, I would insert the bowing one (I think there was one of those.), but I don't remember how. There's no smiley icon thing around.)

Alright, down to business. (First review in months. *cracks knuckles*) :)

Something's bugging me about the punctuation. Perhaps it's because of the start.
'We met during Christmas. At a party, you hosted. Taught me the intricacies of fine dining, of politics, of grand old ladies and esteemed old men.'

That was how I read it. Perhaps you could've written it this way?

'We met during Christmas,
At a party you hosted.
(You) taught me the intricacies
Of fine dining, of politics,
Of grand old ladies
And esteemed old men.'

Putting 'You' in brackets, since I'm still wondering if that part would sound better without it. 'You' is just a suggestion. :)

The other parts seem fine. My fondness for commas is slowly emerging, so I'll have to prevent myself from inserting a dozen commas into your first three stanzas. :D

Anyway, I took a special liking to these two parts.

And I comforted as best I could,
With gifts of silver and gold.
Cold metal did what words could not.

And

It was how I met your sister.

Nice ending. :)

Overall, this is a good piece. Keep writing!
