The last of my re-posts; the next chapter hasn't been posted before. It airs shortly after review day.

A large troop of scarlet on black marched down the spacious courtyard of the Duke, which housed the infamous Dusk Garden. It was named as it was because of the oddly gloomy color scheme of the assortments; dark purples mixed with dull reds, with rivulets of grey orange running amock, all of them shadowed with dark roses and hanging vines, masterfully planted and tended to draw the gaze and hold it. The men traversed in the shadowy confines of looming hedges, which accentuated the depressing atmosphere.

Legend has it that countless slaves were sacrificied as an offering to the Three Devine as the Garden was near completion, to ensure the richness of the soil. Sacrifices or no sacrifices, Damion shuddered with dread; the Dusk Garden always had that effect on him. He offered a prayer to Rasdha, the Lord of Dusk and Ill Fortune, fingers twitching nervously. If this weren't the only way in and out of the Duke's estate, he would never have set so much as a toe in it. As it was, the Dusk Garden was perhaps even more effective against invading armies than the walls enclosing it.

Damion heard the men around him breathing heavily, gulping in large amounts of oxygen in short spaces of time, eyes flickering around nervously. The creaking of leather filled the quiet at random intervals as hilts of sheated swords were fingered with gloved hands, the touch bringing re-assurance to the disquieted veterans.

He glanced at the man on his right and cocked an eyebrow. The Dregh looked at him sharply as if he were an idiot and turned back to watching the bushes.

”Ryne, you fucki-” Damion whispered in annoyance, just to be cut off by a hand falling on his shoulder.

He reflexively jerked away from the touch, bumping into the man next behind him, who then fell onto the man next to him, and so on, until the whole company was in complete turmoil. Bodies fell over each other, stumbling around wildly to escape the imminent threat of attack. Elite veterans or not, the Garden had them nervous as hell, and human nature fears the unknown; nothing but utter pandemonium ensued.

In the middle of the bewildered frenzy, a grip of iron caught Damion by the scruff of his coat, pulling him along roughly into a tangle of vines. Damion hollered for help, inviting a curse from his abducter and a firm hand was raised to cover the offending aperature. His fighting spirit returning to him, Damion bit down hard on the hand, the bitter taste of leather assaulting the innards of his mouth. The hand never faltered, but he heard a grunt of pain. They had reached the heart of the hanging plants and Damion was whirled around to face his captor.

”You bite like a little bitch, bitch.” Ryne's mocking voice was laced with pain though.

He took his hand away from Damion's mouth and shook it with a grimace. Damion had the courtesy of looking only slightly amused.

”Sorry about that,” Damion said without a hint of remorse, ”and anyhow, your mother's a bitch.”

”That's your bloody mother too, nitwit.”

”I'm very well aware of that, thank you very much. Truth is, she was a bitch,” Damion said with a grin, a brief flash of dull white in the grayness.

”Very fucking true that,” Ryne chuckled grimly.

A sudden scream broke through his chuckle and both of the men turned to regard the incident they had just escaped. The commander of the company had pulled out his heavy rapier and was laying about with it mercilessly.

”Pull yourselves the fuck together, you limp-dicked sons of fucking bitches! You lot are supposed to be the best we've got and here you are, screaming like a bunch of whores gaining their pay! Gather your balls from wherever the fuck you misplaced them and don't. Fuc-king. Dis-grace. Your-selves. Fur-ther!”

He punctuated each syllable with a cruel slash of the blade; blood flew in glittering arches at the apexes of his swings, the moonlight enhancing the vividness of the carnage in an awe-inducing way. Tortured cries escaped the victims of their commander's vengeful wrath, echoing in the still night; the ones lucky enough to be far away from the cold bite of the blade scampered even further away. Some of them threw up in the bushes, clutching their stomaches. Damion didn't think any less of them.

”Looks like we got out just in the nick of time, my old friend,” he said disgustedly as a man with a half-severed leg tried to force his way up from the seething mass.

”Aye.”

The grieviously wounded soldier was dragged down by his howling comrades, adding his voice to the demented chorus.

The commander breathed heavily and wiped his glistening blade on the corpse of one of his sub-ordinates. The rapier entered its scabbard again and clanked closed with finality.

”Let the fuckers out of their misery,” he ordered, ”and let this be a lesson to the rest of you.”

The survivors looked upon their pitiful friends with haunted faces, but every last one of them raised their crossbows to their shoulders. Damion looked away when the crossbows discharged, but he couldn't block out the horrible thumping sounds as the bolts hit home, or the shrieks of the dying, or the agonized cries of men as they slaughtered their friends.

”Fuck. Bloody fucking hell.”

Ryne looked at his brother and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, which Damion shrugged off. ”There's nothing we can do about it.”

”I know. I fucking know and that's the worst bit. Fuck...” Damion's clenched fist hit the earth with a thud. ”I feel so damn useless. For fuck's sake, leave me be!”

Ryne let his brother and best friend have a moment of privacy and turned back to observe the aftermath of the scene they had created.
***

The men were forming up again with an air that spoke of a state of shock so deep that you simply went numb. They gazed ahead fixedly, clearly avoiding the bloody mess that was their late comrades; one could not easily discern where one man ended and another began. It was a tangle of blood-soaked limbs, some of them still twitching feebly.

Ryne felt the gorge rise in the back of his throat, but he forced his gaze steady; he had to stay strong for his little brother. He snuck a glance back at Damion, who had his back to him. Damion's dark hair sagged to his shoulders and the tip of his nose could just be seen through the strands of hair, his profile otherwise hidden. Worry touched the eyes of Ryne, but he had promised to give Damion his privacy, and he would honor it.

Ryne looked back as he heard the synchronized beat of heels on the hardened path. Lucky for him and Damion, the massacre had concealed the fact that two of their rank was missing, as it was now impossible to figure out how many lay dead in the heap of corpses. Speaking of corpses, the stinging scent of blood rode the warm currents of air and had just now reached Ryne's nostrils, causing him to mutter a quick curse and cover his mouth and nose with a hand.

He heard a cough behind him and a series of wretching noises, but did not turn around. The splatter of a heavy liquid hitting the ground made Ryne grimace. He cautiously peered down both ends of the path before slowly crawling forward on his belly. A disgustingly warm stink raced him down, causing him to gag reflexively; he closed his mouth forcefully, biting his tongue in the process. Blood trickled into his mouth from the wound, the iron taint spreading around to his tastebuds.

”Holy fucking shit, what the hell has he been eating?” Ryne muttered bitterly in between gags.

Forcing himself forward, Ryne held back his own stomache with nothing but an extreme effort of will; the steadily approaching stench of soiled breeches and split guts wasn't helping. He altered his course a little to the right, so as to skirt past the miserable heap.

Ryne came to a halt in the shelter of a patch of tulips, the leaves stained with a copper tinge on closer inspection. The crunching of boots on gravel could be faintly heard to the left, and Ryne could see a shifting mass of shadow perhaps three-hundred feet away and furthering rapidly.

Ryne and Damion could try their luck wading through the Garden and attempting to scale the twenty-foot wall surrounding it, or they could try to slip past the numerous guards by the gates (assuming that they could even get the gates open in the first place).

Impossible. No, not impossible, just difficult as fuck, Ryne corrected himself in his head.

He looked to his right; the fortifications of the Duke's estate towered over the hanging garden, positioned to bring dusk early to this cursed place.

”I'm starting to see just why this place is named as it is.”

Ryne startled out of his reverie, cursing himself for his lack of vigilance. Damion stood next to him, pale faced and ashen, but holding his head high. His gaze had followed Ryne's and was now locked onto the estate.

It was an old manor, perhaps a hundred years old, beautifully crafted from ash-wood and black marble; veins of yellow criss-crossed through the dark stone, highlighting the sharp edges. It was old as hell, as Ryne knew from documents he had stolen from here, close to crumbling down really, but the Duke wouldn't even hear of renovating it. He thought it had sentimental value as it was. The thirty-foot thick wall surrounding the whole area was practically impentrable; the fortifications were manned around the clock, soldiers patrolling the skies, 20 feet of hardened granite high.

Now this is impossible, no doubts there. Only a gods-damned lunatic would even thi-

”We're going through there.” Damion pointed.

For the love of Kasandra, please don't be pointing at the...

”...Duke's estate.” Ryne finished aloud flatly. He turned to Damion, a vein pulsing on his forehead. ”Are you out of your fucking mind? Don't give me a damn show of being depressed and then tell me to storm the fucking Duke's bloody estate from which we just bloody well made our escape from. Don't you dare go suicidal on me. Moan all you want, but I won't die just because you have a deathwish!”

Damion watched his brother with a calm expression, arms folded on his chest, waiting for him to finish his rant. Ryne's voice had risen to a shout; he was now standing but an inch away from Damion's face, fists clenched and fuming.

”You're my fucking brother. I'm not going to let you kill yourself just because you feel like shit. Man the fuck up and take what life gives you, even if it may be horse shit stuck in a bottle. We'll bloody well be going through the gates and that's final.”

Damion took a step back, gaining some breathing space. He looked his brother square in the eyes and said, ”I haven't the slightest intention of dying in there. What I do intend to pull off is an elaborate escape through the fifth story; the actual details I'll make up as I go. No dying before, in the process, or afterwards. Guaranteed. You coming or not?”

Ryne forced himself to calm down with visible exertion; he took several deep breaths and closed his eyes for a moment. He slowly unclenched his hands and when he opened his eyes, they were twinkling with excitement.

”Gods, I thought I had lost you to the Garden.” Ryne scratched the stubble on his chin, pondering. ”It could work, but the fifth story is heavily guarded, for obvious reasons, and it'll be a bitch to get even that far. How do you intend to get through to there?”

A grin played on Damion's face. ”As I said: I haven't the faintest clue.”

Ryne sighed dramatically and feigned a look of hopelessness. ”Oh well. I do believe it will involve a lot of running around and a long trail of corpses. I'd love to say that it would include cunning and caution as well, but that's not really the Kale style, now is it? We aren't content with a mere escape like anyone with brains would be; no, we have to jump out of a burning tower with trumpets blaring and wanted posters stuck up our asses. After all, the filthy beggars need their entertainment,” he said with a wink.

This brought a laugh from Damion. ”Spot on, my dear malformed friend, spot on.”

”Who the hell are you calling ugly? I'm the one who doesn't possess skin the texture of a turkey's balls.”

The brothers of Kale retreated back into the brush in the direction of the estate, shoving each other and calling each other names that should never have been invented, giving no heed to stealth; they knew there was no need for it in the long run. Their grim laughs echoed through the leaves rustling in the wind, and into the ears of the Dreghs marching towards the gates. They quickened their pace without noticing, the demons of their imagination lashing them on.

Hope y'all enjoyed it!

Quick review again.

It was a good chapter, really vivid. I hated the whole general slaughtering his men part, but really, who would like that sort of thing? But I give you pros for having main characters that get affected by this and not some really bad ass dudes that wouldn't even care. Much more realistic!
That's all I have to say for now.

This just keeps getting better and better :) sorry it took me so long to get to chapter three, BTW!

This is probably the funnest, most readable story I've read on the site. The humor is snappy and effective, and the plot is constantly moving forward in one way or another. I especially love the interplay between the two brothers.

Nothing to really complain about. Great chapter, even greater story :)

Thanks for the comments Paul and Spitfire. :)

No-one would indeed like that sort of thing, Spitfire, and that's exactly why it's there (sick, sick me :P). But jokes aside, this world is supposed to be dark and bizarre. I started writing this to re-route some anger for... can't remember why I was angry at the time, but yeah, that's why. ^^

And no need to apologize, Paul, just read them at your own leisure. That's what they're there for. Thanks for the high praise, it's really appreciated, especially when it comes from the author of "In Memoriam". ;)
