Inception I actually thought was overhyped and overrated. Although if I hadn't gone into it with such high expectations, perhaps I wouldn't have been disappointed. It was a good enough movie, but it didn't really hold my attention. I felt like it was trying too hard to be clever and intriguing and different, and it just fell short.
I think it's got to be The Social Network. It is the only movie I've seen in a long time that has completely held my attention from beginning to end. And everything about it - the performances, directing, script, plot, pace, everything - I thought was just how film making is supposed to be. It was brilliance, perfection. I also thought The Town was a great film, but it didn't intrigue me to the same degree as The Social Network. I also enjoyed Kick-Ass, lol, but my vote has got to be for The Social Network. It's the epitome of a well-made, captivating film.
I'm going to throw a British curveball and say Monsters was probably one of my favourite films of the year.
It was just so different and achieved so much on such a small budjet and I highly respect the director Gareth Edwards. Such a beautifully shot film (shot on digital) and just an amazing story.
I did quite enjoy Inception and How to Train Your Dragon and Kick Ass was pretty good too. Also there are things like Winter's bone and A Prophet. Oooh and Nowhere Boy! That film was really good.
I'm kind of looking forward to a lot of awards season films too.
