Scratched and Broken Record
~
I was staring at a blank doc –
the one that was supposed to be
filled with words for Am. Lit. – and
feeling like I was banging my head
against a wall, my only thought
I don’t want to do this anymore.
And baby, I’m not talking about
my English essay.
~
The thought danced around and around
inside my head, skipping and jumping all about
– perhaps that was the source
of my increasing headache. More likely,
though, it came from your words ringing
in my mind like broken bells
It was just a kiss, okay, it didn’t mean anything.
I take it back. I’m familiar enough with the words
to know that it sounded more akin
to a scratched and broken record.
~
Biting my lip, I fought back tears
and blamed my watery eyes on the
harsh light emanating from my laptop screen.
I tried to switch gears, to move my brain
from parked at this sad and sorry station
to – well, anywhere else is good enough.
Deciding to take a rest stop at
La Montagne Française, I stared at chart
after chart of verb conjugations,
the only thought in my head
Je ne veux pas faire plus.
Et bébé, je ne parle pas de
Mes devoirs de français.
~
But that was last week, and I’ve
yet to say anything, to do anything.
You’re standing by my side as our
friends talk about something I couldn’t
care less for and you flirt with my “best” friend –
you know, the girl you kissed last week –
and all I can think is
I just can’t do this anymore.
I’m tired of your cheating, and I want nothing
more than to simply say the phrase
that’s been racing through my head
faster than your favorite NASCAR racecar #48.
And baby, it just crossed the finish line and entered
the winner’s circle as I tell you all that I’ve been
thinking. And though everyone’s silent, awaiting your
reply, I just walk away and don’t look back,
‘cause baby I don’t have to do that anymore.

Critiques are very much appreciated, as this is one of the few poems I've written that I actually like and want to improve. :) Also, any suggestions for a better title?

Thanks for reading!

Hello,
I'm here to review.

The first thing i'd say is that, i'd break it up a bit more. As it is very daunting and a bit off putting, but is full of good emotion.

The poem is good with emotion, but lacks in imagery, don't worry lots of poets do this. I consider it as weighing scales it has to be perfectly balanced for it to be right, where as, this would be lob sided and towards emotion. I would just write in a bit more imagery and that would make it even better.

The length is really good and solid and aids the poem a lot.

In my mind, the first and second stanza did not work together. The message I got at the end of the first stanza is this girl is contemplating suicide, but then you threw love into the queation and it threw me. A lot of good poems do this, but write subtle undertones into the prior stanza, which I would recomend here.

The use of Doc- on the first line made me think of Doctor and wasn't really clarified til the next stanza, I would change it to page to be honest, as that makes it more clear, however, that may just be me.

personally, I would give the poem eight out of ten with the potential to be a ten, it just needs tweaking.

If you anymore advice or a deeper review, feel free to ask and I will do my best.

Keep it up.
