Song: ‘You Can’ by David Archuleta
- - - - - - -
There was a blue wisp floating down the centre of a stage. It was bright everywhere; the place seemed to be devoured in white light. Only the stone stage, a few stone pillars, and the brightly coloured wisps were visible.
The blue wisps froze and stayed where he were. He saw another motionless blue wisp on the other end of the stage. She was of a lighter azure shade and this had charmed him every time he saw her or gets to talk with her sometime.
The moment was like the time when Nathaniel, a guy in high school, was in one of the slightly crowded school’s corridors, looking at his crush on the other end. He had felt this way about her for years already, and that was their last year together as classmates – their Senior year.
He wore a blue jacket, a plain brown shirt, and a pair of jeans. His book was left unnoticed in his right hand, below his waist. She wore a shirt of lighter blue, and a pair of black pants. She held her green expanded envelope in her left hand. Her name was Sharmaine. They were both still. He looked at her and she looked at him. They were nearly oblivious of the other students.
[Intro plays]
{Hmm}
[First Verse]
{Take me where I’ve never been
Help me on my feet again
Show me that good things come to those who wait}
Nathaniel was merely standing there, as if he was waiting for anything to happen. He wanted Sharmaine to come to him, but he knew it wouldn’t happen. That was what he thought.
{Tell me I’m not on my own
Tell me I won’t be alone
Tell me what I’m feeling isn’t some mistake
‘Cause if anyone can make me fall in love,
You can}
[Chorus]
{Save me from my self, you can
And, it’s you and no one else}
All the other wisps were like mere evanescence in their seemingly endless gaze at each other, fading and vanishing like illusions. They were just like the students in the hallway who were busy in their own ways. Nathaniel hardly cared about them. He didn’t even think about what they were wearing. But still, he was distractible.
A pink-coloured wisp slowly but gaily approached the unmoving blue wisp. Another girl classmate of Nathaniel came the same way as the pink wisp did. Her name was Elynnai. She asked him things that barely even touched his treasure chest of memories. She chatted with him in a casual way and Nathaniel thought that she liked him. He also liked her but only as a friend and a classmate. He wondered if she knew that there was hardly any chance that he can divert his emotions to another. This, he wondered himself.
{If I could wish upon tomorrow,
Tonight would never end
If you asked me, I would follow
But, for now, I’ll just pretend
‘Cause if anyone can make me fall in love,
You can}
Nathaniel talked with her in his own manner of pathic communication, though he smiled and laughed freely as he willed. Moments passed by and later, there was a green wisp. She, too, approached the blue wisp. And, there was another classmate of Nathaniel who came and talked with him. Her name was Nikki and, to him, she talked a bit less.
[Second Verse]
{Baby, when you look at me,
Tell me – What do you see?
Are these the eyes of someone you could love?}
He never missed a chance to make even the shortest glimpse at Sharmaine all the time. He didn’t know if those two other classmates of his noticed and he was actually insecure about it. Yet, he tried to remain collected, but he wasn’t sure if he succeeded at that.
{‘Cause everything that brought me here
Well, now, it all seemed so clear
Baby, you’re the one that I’ve been dreaming of
If anyone can make me fall in love,
You can}
Then, a comparison unintentionally began in his mind. Thoughts flooded him like they always had in his entire life. He remembered things…experiences…and aligned them in those thoughts.
…Sharmaine…
You really are the very first one who made me feel this way. You, despite of not talking with me as often as the others, ‘told’ my lonely heart that it can have someone to be with, someone to share emotions with…someone to make it happy…even for the rarest and subtlest times.
Elynnai,
You are as cheerful as the sunshine that chases away the rain. I guess I’ve never seen anyone grin too much in my life. You are really nice and friendly.
Nikki,
He chuckled in his thought.
Haha, we always sing together! Maybe, not always but I really enjoyed those duets. I hope we can have more before the school year ends. And, you know what? I guess you’re my second crush.
Still, the labyrinth of these ‘lousy’ thoughts of mine and my heart returns to Sharmaine. It’s kind of painful that I do not know if you would ever feel the same way. But, there always seemed to be something. I don’t know what you think. There is only one thing that I know – I know that you can…
[Chorus Repeats]
{Save me from myself, you can
And, it’s you and no one else
If I could wish upon tomorrow,
Tonight would never end
If you asked me, I would follow
But, for now, I’ll just pretend
‘Cause if anyone can make me fall in love…}
All this time, the wisps and the ‘bright’ place was just all in Nathaniel’s vague imagination, and he pushed them all away now. Everything was dark this time.
In his right hand, he held a rose – a bright red, lovely rose, and he was sure to give it to Sharmaine. In his left hand, he held his ‘heart’, and loudly it kept beating.
He was wearing a black suit and she wore a beautiful white dress. To him, the picture was like a prom night. But, there were only two of them. The other existing things became the rounded white lights, the empty white-clothed seats and round tables, and the endless red carpet.
There he stood at the middle of ‘nowhere’ – upon the red, beneath the white, and within the black – thinking nothing but the one dreaded question: “Will you dance with me?” And, there she was – upon the white, above the red, and also, within the black – sitting towards his direction.
Ultimately, he stepped forward, trying to comfort himself as he did, towards her.
[Bridge]
{Only you can take me sailing in your deepest eyes
Bring me to my knees and make me cry
And, no one’s ever done this
Everything was just a lie
And, I know
Yes, I know}
He was now in front of her, standing, holding his breath. He ought to ask the question, he really did. But, he did not. He gave the rose to her which she kindly accepted. She placed it on her table and looked at him again. He carefully lifted his right hand and opened it towards her. She took it as she stood up. Nathaniel’s heart sank into his left hand, and there, it continued to beat. No, it no longer beat. It pounded, and he could hear it clearly in his head. The ‘sound’ was simply loud.
They finally were at the middle of that ‘nowhere’. Out of nowhere, there was a spotlight. And…
[Last Chorus]
{This is where it all begins
So tell me it’ll never end
I can’t fool myself
It’s you and no one else}
Then, as endlessly as it seemed, they danced and danced. In their own way of waltzing – hand above shoulder; hand on waist – they danced…’round and ‘round in the same spot. Thoughts had flooded his mind once more.
{If I could wish upon tomorrow,
Tonight would never end
If you asked me, I would follow
But, for now, I’ll just pretend
If anyone can make me fall in love,
You can}
I’d like her to hug me…but no, I don’t have the confidence to ask her to do that nor to do that myself. It would be our last dance together. But, time seems to be running out now. College will come sooner than we think, and we could hardly be together again.
Their surroundings suddenly shrank smaller, the darkness crept closer, and the lights had diminished into only one – their spotlight.
Sharmaine,
I wrote you a song that you’ll never get to hear. And, like what I wrote there, ‘I’ll be waiting…even if we are apart. I promise you – I’ll stay in love with you’ …until we meet again.
{Show me that good things come to those who wait}
