Black and White Still Life

A black and white still life. Part of my attempt to start learning photography.

Hey! This is a beautiful picture. I must say black and white photographs just speak to me. They're just so...inspiring? I can't really find the right word I love the light and the shadows.

The only thing is that the file is too big so can't see it all and have to scroll up, down and left to see the whole thing. It kind of takes away from the whole thing :S

Hey inkwell!

That is beautiful! Really. You have a good eye for composition/lighting/arrangement. I love the mild tilt accentuated by the cylindrical objects as if things will fall, no matter what.
I just have a few nitpicks.
1.The bright glare on the bottle at the back distracts me a lot.
2.That narrow triangular gap at the top-right corner (between the canister and the edge of the photo) is disturbing. I;d suggest cropping it.
3. And I do think if you reduce the pic's brightness a wee bit, it would look better (Personal thought.)

I'm not really bothered by the first two things you mentioned, I think the background glare looks pretty cool, and I actually hardly notice the second one. Then again I'm still learning the medium and how to judge it.

The brightness I would agree is a tad much, however I left it for two reasons. First is that I did not want to tamper with the photo at all! The only thing I did was grayscale it. I feel like taking "pure" photos is the best way to learn. Second of all, when I printed the photo on glossy photo paper it wasn't as bright and was more just right. I think the computer's backlight is what makes it too strong.

I really like it- I would consider possibly turning up the contrast just a wee bit, barely a touch, and I think it would add a lot to the picture. As it is though, this is really good. I love the lighting, and the simplicity of the piece. Nice job.

It's me again!

First off, I love the contrast between the metal pieces and the glass... Pretty intense. Secondly, I love the lighting. Again, the contrast is great, between the light and the dark... It's beautiful. I love how simple it looks, but isn't. Great job!

Inkwell, 1St I loved the way you set it up. It's just something it gives off.
But my advice is too start expiermenting with different angles.
Thats what I did and you get alot of suprising cool things.

I am really loving your photography. I'm also a beginner and will be developing some photos in my schools dark room this wednesday, I'll post some up here and maybe you can let me know what you think. This photo tricked me into thinking it was a drawing. I love it, amazing! For a beginners attempt your outstanding.
