I've been meaning to post this ever since I wrote it this summer, after a similar experience happened to me.
The sun beats down on me as I walk up the steps and take my place in line. A palm tree sways in a slightly cool Californian wind, throwing my blond hair off my shoulders for a moment before the heat returns.
“Dibs,” a voice behind me says, making me jump slightly. I turn around to see two boys a few years older than I arguing in hushed whispers.
I turn back around, reading the minimum age and height sign for the Blood Curdling Haunted House Ride. I bite my lip slightly as I hear one of the boys let out an exasperated sigh and a “fine.”
The line slowly moves across the sidewalk, my heart drumming as I glance at the torch holding skeletons and peeling mummies. But I think that the real reason my heart is beating so hard is because I can literally feel the gazes of the boys on my back as I walk.
I sit down in the vehicle, one of the boys sitting next to me and the other behind us. I take in the boy’s sitting next to me appearance. His dirty blond hair hangs just below his eyebrows, framing his tan face and emerald green eyes.
“So, are you scared?” he asks me and I jump slightly once again at the sound of his voice.
“No,” I reply, looking away from him quickly.
“Well, its gonna be dark, you probably want a kiss to keep your mind off of being scared, am I right?” he says, grinning like a total idiot.
I gasp slightly in disgust. “Are you calling me a slut or something?”
He chuckles. “Of course not, I’m just calling you beautiful.” This can’t be real; he covered up his mistake as smoothly as paint.
I feel my cheeks redden, and star straight ahead as the cat jolts, sending us into a torch illuminated tunnel. The drop is sudden, plunging us into pitch-black night. A scream comes from my lips as a breath of cold air sends chills crawling down my spine. A voice whispers threats through the dark tunnel as we sit there, suddenly motionless. The cart starts up again, swaying this way and that, scabby hands reaching out to grab at me. Suddenly, I feel tingles run up my legs as I watch spiders pour from fire lighted cracks. “Get me out of here!” I scream as water splashes onto my arm.
“Shh,” the boy tells me, his arms suddenly wrapping themselves around me. My face buries itself almost automatically into his chest as a response.
I feel myself shaking as he pulls me out of the embrace, us staring into each other’s eyes as best as we can in the surrounding darkness. I don’t know what I feel. I have only just met him but suddenly; I have the urge to…
But I don’t have to make the move, his lips press gently onto mine, making the screams and moanings of monster suddenly fade. His hands run through my blond hair as the pressure of his lips increase. The smell of slat water and freshly mowed grass linger in my nose as we pull apart, smiling as the sun greets our eyes.
“See ya babe,” he says as he hops out of the cart, leaving me staring after him. It takes me till the moment I notice he is gone that I realize we don’t even know each other’s names.
I stand up, leaving the ride and running outside of the fence. “There you are!” my mom shouts, walking towards me. I look in every direction, searching frantically for my five-second kiss. “So, how was it?” she asks me as I spot him, his arm snaking around a pale, giggly red head.
I turn away quickly, facing my mom. Suprisingly enough I feel tears slowly prick my eyes and I swallow, fighting against them.
“Honey, how was it?” My mom repeats the question.
I shake my head slightly. “A total waste of time,” I mutter.
“Oh? So it wasn’t fun or anything special?”
I shake my head, glancing to where the boy is standing. He hands the red head a stuffed yellow bear as I say: “It was just another spooky ride.”
