Chapter One
My face slammed into the steering wheel as the car crashed hard into the tree. Blood dripped into my eyes from the new raw wound on my forehead. I felt Declan's cold fingers lightly touch my forehead and the wound instantly closed up. I looked behind me to check on the others: Tabatha, Morgan, and Parker. Tabatha was holding her nose that had smashed into Declan's seat but was alright. Parker had a small cut on his forehead and looked like he was trying to see it. Morgan had a nose bleed but other than that, seemed okay.
We all hopped out of the car. I stared at my vehicle-well my stolen vehicle. The whole front of the red Acadia was totaled. Stupid Tree. Stupid Shay- You were driving.
I looked behind me and saw Declan healing the other kid's wounds. His healing powers really came in handy sometimes. “ Nice driving Shay.” He said in a very very obvious sarcastic tone. I raised my eyebrows at him. He flipped his strawberry blonde bangs off his coconut colored face. I sat down on the grass.
“Hey.” Declan said, sitting down beside me minutes later.
“ How we supposed to get there now?” I asked. He smiled at me.
“ I thought you where the leader, you make the big decisions.” He said, laying his palm on mine so the scab on my hand that I picked at every day would go away. I shrugged. He shrugged.
“Train maybe?” I suggested. He nodded, digesting that and working it out in his mind. He nodded again.
“Good idea, lets go.” He said getting up. He offered me his hand and I took it. He lifted me up and I announced my idea to my group.
“ Alright guys. As you know our mission is to get our butts over to the White House in three days or Mikhail Yelvlinch is going to kill the president. So, I have decided we will take a train as far as it goes since I crashed our most recent ride.” I shrugged. Parker raised his hand, waiting for me to call on him to speak.
“ Park, you don't have to raise your hand. Go ahead.” I told him.
“How do we get to the train station?” He asked. My look of satisfaction faded and Parker giggled along with all the others. Declan was trying to hold back his laughs but it wasn't working.
“Good question.” I said and racked my brain for the answer to Parker's question.
“ We walk?” Morgan suggested. I nodded at her.
“Yes I guess we walk. But we need to stop at a gas station and look at a map.” I told them. I looked at Declan but his eyes were on the sky.
“ We better get walking, storm as it looks like.” Declan declared. Sadly he was right. The dark gray clouds were covering the sun and darkness started to sweep over the land. I nodded.
“ Well, I'll be at the gas station. Waiting.” Tabatha said. I shook my head at her, jealous of her. You see, Tabatha had what you call super speed. You can't even see her when she runs. But I was smiling and before I could tell her good bye, she took of in a blur. A slight wind blew my long brown hair back into Declan's face. He pushed my hair out of his face.
“ I have a feeling I'm gonna barf up a hairball real soon.” Declan said. I stuck my tongue out at him. He smiled his perfect, amazing smile. I jogged off down the street without a word.
Declan pulled his jacket up over his shoulders so he wouldn't get wet from the pouring rain. I on the other hand didn't have a jacket. I spat a load of water out of my mouth and water dripped from my lips. April showers were beating us down tonight. Except Tabatha who should have made it farther than us, even to a gas station by now. I was soaked from head to toe and my clothes were sticking to me. I bunched up the corner of my gray tank and squeezed. Water poured from my shirt and onto my tennis shoes which were squeaking with every step. Not to complain, but I was freezing my bum off, too. My teeth started to chatter. And I heard the squeak of Declan's shoes as he came closer to me.
“Cold?” He asked. I nodded, placing my arms across my chest trying to keep warm. Declan put his arm across my shoulder and pulled me closer to him. Awkwardly we walked side by side down the paved, black and slippery roads. After a few moments of humorous whistles from Parker I felt more comfortable and rested my head on his shoulder. We walked for what seemed like forever in the rain. Finally in became more of a drizzle and the sun peeked it's way back through the clouds, though the sun had to be going down soon.
“Car.” Morgan hissed from behind. Declan made a dramatic dive into the side of the road, unnecessary, but we all did the same.
The back lights faded and I spit soggy grass out of my mouth. Declan stood up. His jaw tightened as he realized he dived right into a puddle of mud. He spat mud out of his mouth. I put my hand over my mouth. Declan walked away.
“Ooh Declan needs a potty break.” Parker said, pointing at the splotch of mud on the back of Declan's pants. My whole crew laughed including me, well, except for Declan.
“Shut up, Parker! I'm tired of your jokes!” Declan screamed. Everyone fell silent.
Parker looked hurt then turned cold. “ Your not my dad!” He retorted.
“Nobody is! We have no parents! So shut your mouth and let's go!” Declan shouted. But right as it fell out of his mouth he knew he had made a mistake. His eyes softened.
“ Parker, I-No- I didn't mean that bud'” He stammered. Parker choked out a huge sob and sank to his knees. Declan ran to his side, splashing me with water as he ran through a puddle. Declan rapped his arms around the ten year old but Parker pushed him away. Declan looked at me for help. I shook my head at him and stomped by him, over to the sobbing little boy. I hugged him and he wrapped his arms around me and sobbed into my shoulder. Over his shoulder I spotted Morgan sitting on the side of the road, watching us carefully. Probably reading our minds, as usual. Oh, did I forget to tell you that that twelve year old can read minds? Well yeah, she can.
I stood up when Parker was all dried out. He back handed the tears from his eyes. He never cries. I've known him for 13 out of my 15 years of life and he was one tough kid, as all of us were. Something about bringing up our parents made us soft. Because We had no parents.
