The Boner

By Hiadel
~Enjoy!

A hard sound cracked across the stale room. It vibrated and loosened the air around it, and immediately upset the natural balance that exists in a bedroom at night.

My body responded, and bones slid from beneath my side of the covers up to the surface. The red velvet that covered my body slid off me and exposed my rib cage to the air. Decades of death marked me, with scratches covering the white canvas of my body. Deep groves ran along my skull to form large black snakes that stained my head. I’m dead, but only physically. My mind has never felt better in my entire existence. Now that I’m dead, most of the problems that have plagued my living life have vanished. I no longer have to care about the appearance of my skin or face, and health problems are nonexistent. There’s not too much you have to worry about when you’re dead, and in a strange but simple way that’s really comforting.

So I let my white legs swing from the bed and hit the floor. Answering the call of the sound I pushed away from the other body on the bed and walked across the room towards the door. Putting my bare hand on the door knob I turned to look at my wife who was still asleep in bed. Even in death she still looks as beautiful as she did when we were alive. I’m not saying she has a perfect figure or anything like that, but she definitely is a pretty skeleton to wake up to in the mornings. To me she makes everything else in the room seem………… alive. But that’s not a bad thing. Once you die you realize how wonderful the world of death is and your feelings toward life are not the same. In fact the people who live in the world of death actually prefer it to life. In the world of life you have disease, stress, and other conflicts that weigh you down. Here in the afterlife all that washes away with your skin. All you are left with is the love in your soul and a few white bones.

Turning the knob I opened the door and creaked down the hall quietly. Going down the hall I let my eyes look out a window and take in the sights of the night. Dawn was about to strike and the dark sky started to leak a bright red color out in the distance. Bats were screeching as they realized it was time to go back to their caves, and all the skeletal creatures that scavenged the desert landscape outside scuttled back to their homes.

People always think of the underworld as such a bad place. They envision pools of fiery blood and imprisoned people hanging from the sides of steep cliffs with nails in their arms. When people die and make their way down here it amazes me how surprised they are to find such a pleasant place. They wake up covered in bone and sit up and find a beautiful red sky stretching across the horizon. Surprised, they stumble across the flat landscape covered with small shrubs and sand until they reach other people and settle down in a village. I like to call it the most southern heaven.

The living arrangements aren’t as bad as you would think either. We have a small villa that looks out onto the countryside. It’s nothing special, but it’s not like you need anything else to get by. From the window I just passed you could see rolling hills and the desert scraping up against the red sky. The sky must be the most beautiful thing I’ve seen, dead or alive. Sometimes Sandra and I would walk out and sit on a pile of rocks that had a view of the entire countryside. We’d sit there at this time of day and watch the sky change colors as we shared stories from life and death. The color that crossed that sky seemed to instigate passion and loosen up barriers that held feelings back.

Rounding the corner I followed the sound that awoke me into the living room. As my sockets turned and scanned the room I saw the disturbance. Another person was in the room, and in their hands was a brown case. Light came through a nearby window from the dawn’s rising and highlighted their bone and the golden locks on the case. Letting my feet hit the floor loud and hard I made my way as fast as I could towards the case and its holder.

I wasn’t about to let this mysterious intruder steal the most valuable thing I own. I’ve had that case for the longest time and I couldn’t bear to exist without it. The reason it was so special was because several lifetimes ago when Sandra and I were alive we had been sitting on our patio outside when she gave it to me. She had gotten up and left momentarily and came back with the small case. Sitting down on the long bench outside she let me open it and explore its contents. There were two large blind folds that sat in the case on top of a red velvet interior. Taking one of the black blindfolds out I fingered it in my hands, trying to make sense of the strange gift.

Seeing me struggle she took my hand and helped me put it over my eyes. Turning the sky before me dark I let the silence overtake me. Still not being sure why she gave me that gift I waited until she told me what to do with it. All that information I needed came with the delicate touch of a finger. It came on my shoulder and immediately released all the tensions I had inside of me. My muscles became unwound and her fingers set to work on me.

Feeling her warm body press up to me on the bench I could tell what the blindfolds were for. She came at me in the darkness and wrapped herself around me as I soaked all the affection in. It was so fantastic for me to not be able to see! I could feel fingers dancing and legs stretching out onto the bench as we each found positions. My imagination roamed the endless realm that was the dark as I imagined anything I wanted to go with the bumping and grinding action I was feeling from her. To me that evening she had skin of a goddess and the figure of a supermodel. I drew the picture of pleasure in my mind as her breasts and lips pressed hard into me. Yes, I was the master of my bliss and even though I couldn’t see anything it didn’t matter because I could feel more in those few minutes than I could ever in my entire existence.

And so I came towards the skeleton in the dark with my knuckles clenched to demand my pleasures back when the skeleton turned its head. In the dark I could barely make out a pair of blindfolds that were strapped to the top of its head. Holding back my punch I put one hand forward and felt the side of its skull and recognized the etchings and cracks on its sides as Sandra’s. But how? I had just left her back in our room under the covers.

As if answering my question she came close to me and put one of her arms around me. Letting her bony fingers snap, everything around us turned to dust and dematerialized. The couch faded into nothingness and a nearby dresser decomposed and was swept away. When everything had finished vanishing we appeared by the countryside where we had shared so much time together. Taking a look at the magical landscape I let it fade into darkness as she put the other blindfold over my eyes.

It was the snap! I recognized that sound. It was the same sound that pulsed through our bedroom this early morning. Feeling her mouth come to the backside of my neck I could sense that old sensation crawling back. Were those lips I was feeling? Her other hand came up my front to click against my rib cage. How did she know my muscles enjoyed that? Taking one of my free hands I brought it up behind me to feel her head and play with the hair I had always loved. She must have known all along what I was thinking.

I’m not saying she has a perfect figure or anything like that, but she definitely is a pretty skeleton to wake up to in the mornings.I think that you should erase the s in mornings. I feel that everyone will get the point without it being plural. Also I sounds better.
Down here in the afterlife all that washes away with your skin.I don't like the way this sounded either. I had to read it about three times to understand it. I don't know what could replace it, but I don't feel it fits.
Going down the hall I looked out a window and took in the sights of the night. In this I thing that you changed the time tense. At first you were doing this, and now it seems like it is somewhat past tense.

Bats were screeching as they realized it was time to go back to their caves, and all the skeletal creatures that scavenged the desert landscape outside scuttled back to their homes.

Alright, that was just a few nitpics. I liked this story, it was something I have never read before. The end kind of confused me though. Are they back from the dead or was it just a dream, or was it something else?

Though it kept my interest I think that there is a lack of events in the story to really make it interesting. I would love to read more of it to find out what the real plot is.

The only other comment I had was after I started reading the story I read the title again and started laughing at the I guess you would call it a pun....I don't know. Anyway I love it!

Keep Writing

My reality comes to a close as I once again realize that you don't love me, and even if I love you with my everything you will never care.

Deep groves ran

Should be "grooves".

This was very interesting. It felt a bit rambling to me, but the idea itself is really interesting. On the one hand, there's a lot that could be filled in, like whether or not everyone is allowed/able to take things they had in life with them to the underworld, but on the other hand, there were a number of details and tangents that I think could/need to be cut out or condensed, like the whole thing about living arrangements. I think if you tightened this up structurally, it would be a much stronger story.

I can't help wondering, though, if they're only bone, how can they see?
