Sliding into the front seat I grip the steering wheel tightly, first day of school. Junior year, second year at this school. Transferred halfway through freshman year, forced to attend school unwillingly.
I think like this for several seconds, my thoughts are choppy and short. My heart races, I’m nervous even though I’ve been going to school here for a while. But this year feels different, I’m older now. I care less about what others think, but most of all is I just… feel changed. After getting taken this summer I feel stronger, more able. But I also have that feeling of fear, fear because of him, what if he comes back. Please stop thinking about that Admira, I tell myself. It will only get worse; I can’t let him control me anymore, he’s gone anyway.
Turning into the parking lot I see my friends waving to each other, hugs and claps on the back are dispersed. I find a parking spot next to them; they don’t notice me. They’re all standing in circle waiting for the doors of the school to open. Getting out of the car I grab my beaded shoulder bag, as I walk towards them they all grow silent and still. Quick looks are directed at me, “Hi Admira, I’ve got to get something from my car real quick.” Cassie says this without looking me in the eyes, Josh follows her. His eyes are trained on the floor as he passes me, the others in the group include: Miles, Kate, and Emma. Miles and Kate look at each other and walk quickly towards the school doors, which have just opened seconds earlier.
Emma is the only one still standing there; she looks up into my eyes and smiles. “How are you doing,” She asked softly; I see concern in her eyes.
“Just fine and dandy,” I reply with a smile. She’s the greatest friend ever, the others treat me like a walking zombie after they found out I was kidnapped and found. But she… she understands sort of, even though it’s never happened to her, she understands.
“Well that’s good,” She says as we walk side by side into the school. As I walk to my locker she gives me a small smile and waves her hand goodbye.
