A Tree and a Rock, don't I sound in-ter-esting?

For da questions, it's a magic old oak, with no leaves. The rocks are magic rocks for the magic dudes to practice writing magic on.
The scribbles and loopy curves are magic.
The leaves on the ground were once part of the magic old oak tree.
They are not magic.

Wow, okay, I won't even hesitate when I say that this is just an over all very wonderful piece. The image is well balanced with the rocks, in a sense, interacting with the tree. They aren't just, like, standing there next to it.

But what's really rather impressive is the detail that you put into everything from the writing on the rocks to the branches and bark of the tree. It does seem to bend under the weight of a long and arduous history.

*Likes!*

I really love your detail in this drawing. Did you do it with an ink pen? If you didn't it would look great if you went over it with an ink pen. I agree with lilymoore, it really looks cool how the tree looks connected to the rock.

Haha. Nice job, this drawing does look magical. I agree with tam_ara, this would look even better if you went over it with an ink pen. If you want to give it a more dramatic feel, just coloring in parts of the rocks or maybe a few of the leaves on the ground would be cool.

Hello, Jenny. :D

Erm, I'm sure I say this every time, but you really are a wonderful drawer. I'm curious, though - is this drawing (and are any of your other drawings) accompaniments to (hypothetical?) stories you're writing? Or are they all just random?

Although above reviews said they liked the way the rocks and the tree connect, I think I'd prefer it if there was a clearer distinction between them. The rocks a magical, therefore I think it would have more impact if they looked quite bold and powerful.

I also think it could be improved if the magic on the rocks stood out a little more. Make them really bold and amazing - I think they could be a little more dramatic.

The tree is lovely. It's all lovely, really.

Good job!

Hmm, first off, it was all done with an ink pen. My newest favorite one. I don't think I'd want to color it, since most of my drawings look best (in my opinion) without color. The tree and rocks aren't really connected, just in a sort of hypothetical way. Actually, the tree is behind the rocks. I set the whole image up so that your eyes travel up the little spray of leaves, up the slope made by the combination of tree trunk and rock, over the tangle of twigs and then down into a turmoil that is the steeper drop behind the tree. It symbolizes the rise and terrible fall of the magic-men (who were caught and burned at stake).
Amy, None of my drawings have anything to do with my stories unless I set out to draw them. And usually, when I 'set out' to draw something, it turns out looking terrible. This drawing actually started as a doodle. This explains why a lot of my drawings are on lined paper.
Also, by 'ink pen', did you guys mean a dip-ink pen? I use a ball point pen, but it has nicely flowing ink, almost like a gel pen. (cost a pretty penny too, that thing)
Anyways, thanks very much for the compliments and criticism.
Oh, and a note on the date, (3/5/'10) I put my month before the day, so this drawing was actually done in March. Kinda old, I know, but it was too good a piece to be lelft behind.

A tree emerging from a rock? Looks interesting. You're a perfectionist, dude.

Duuuuude! Another one! This was just flippin' awesome like I can't believe. :D How do you do it?

Okay, first off: don't color. I can tell that if you colored these, it would be somewhat ruined by the effect. You are doing just fine without anything else but that miraculous ink pen you have.

Second: Don't get rid of that pen. If you do, a band of flying monkeys will come and eat your soul. Instead, give it to me. I have a feeling that it'll be worth something someday. (the renowned Jenthura's original pen, with which he made the legendary something or other) ;)

Oh, and as for the drawing itself...It tells a story. Not even kidding. It seriously lets me imagine the world where this takes place. That is an awesome thing.

P.S. When you post more of your artwork, please let me know in my Will Review for Food thread! I would definitely like to know. ;)

Hey Jenthura, this is KD, here to review!
You did a very good job with this. I love the branches and the markings on the rocks. I think this piece would be even cooler if...
1. You add more contrast between the rock(s) and the tree. They kinda blend in with each other fairly well.
2. (Below) See the part that I circled in orange? I would add a little bit more space between the branches there, because for a while I thought that part was all part of a very thick trunk.
Hope I helped!

I liked your explanation that preceded the drawing. I think it was the "they are not magic" that sold me. Maybe I'm just reaching that uber-sleepy point where I should just say enough is enough and head to bed, but that made me laugh.

Anyway, the black and white is really cool. I'd like to see it bigger, with really good resolution, because it looks like you've included a lot of great details. I'm no artist, but I do really like this. Thanks for sharing!

much respect. it reminds me so much of the children's books i used to read with the colourless illustrations every 10 or 20 pages. i dabble a little in sketching too, so i appreciate how long it takes to get that detail down, even if it takes us one eye movement to take in the whole thing! i love how the engravings LOOK like engravings. you've added depth very well.

aces bro!

Shub: The tree and rock are disconnected in reality, but when put together on paper, they come together. Realistically, the rocks would be a couple of feet away from the tree, but that's completely unimportant to the picture. I just want to say two things, 1) the tree is not emerging from the rocks, not in the sense I think you're thinking of. The tree is rooted down into the round, but I've drawn it to look like that. Urgh, hard to explain. 2) I'm surprised that you inferred from simply this post that I'm a perfectionist. Many of my friends and family think so too (in fact, they believe I'm overkill).
Yuriiko: Thanks a lot! I would think my hands had nothing to do with it (just my brain). By the way, as long as I'm on the subject, here's a little bit about my hands. I have a weird callus on my third (middle) finger. Whenever I draw, I press the pen so tightly into that callus that it's become impossible to remove (it looks like a little bump). Sometimes after drawing a large amount of pictures, my hands shake and tremble because I exerted so much force, definitely not good for me, but completely force-of-habit. I decided to share that because I feel weird right now, and (like Areida) I'm reaching that uber-sleepy point.
JDizzle: Of course it does, you would not have posted otherwise. :D
Knightly: Yes. No. Yes.
Yes for the color, I've always been fascinated by old British diagrams of ships (which must have greatly influence my drawing skills) and I've always done the bulk of my drawings with a single color; black.
No for the pen. Now that you've mentioned it, I realize it might be famous someday. So I'm keeping it to auction off for a million big ones when I become a world-renowned artist. Around that time (if I still remember) I'll send you five bucks with a note, "Thanks for the tip!
Yes for the PM subscription, but be warned: I'm terrible with promises, and so many people have asked for PM warnings of my drawing posts that I can barely remember a fifteenth of them.
Have an awesome day.
KD: Argh, you pointed out the only two errors I saw myself.
Reason for number one was because i was afraid that all the detail would ruin any sort of darkening I would have to put between the tree and rocks. As in, to make that contrast, I would normally do some crosshatching, but I've already put so many lines for the rough bark that it would be overkill-detail.
Reason for the second was simply that it was going to be that thick of a trunk, but when I realized that it would look awkward, I cut it into two trunks (actually several). however, the upper branch dips down and goes behind the next branch, and because there really isn't much distinction between the two, the empty space can look kinda like part of the trunk.
Areida: I owe that line to Kipling's dry British humor. I read his books as a child ("...and the squiggly part is the maze the man has to go through after he finishes talking to Amar-Solim, Best Beloved.") and most of his words seeped into my writing and speech. COme to think of it, I had a lot of English influence as a child. But that's okay, right, Amy?
Anywho, thanks for the comment, Areida.
(PS, how would one go about pronouncing such a name as the one previously entitled to your beloved person?)
Treehugger: Thanks! I now have a new word in my vocabulary. ASTIG!
Ember: The engravings just took a little 3D perception, that's all. You'll notice where the lines go around the rock (to the 'behind'side) there will be a cutout in the profile of the rock.

Thanks so much everybody for all the compliments and likes, you don;t know how much making it into the Featured section (again) makes my day!
Peace out!
