Chapter 7
Now here I am with the one and only Logan, the moment Reds leaves. His attention becomes transfixed upon me; ignoring his stares I survey the room quickly. The ground is cement with several cracks in it, there’s a couch in the far corner and a ratty box filled with books, there are no windows and the paint is a dirty white. The ceiling is concrete as well, making a conclusion I find I must be in a basement of some sort. The walls and ceiling are made of cement and the temperature is freezing, every second now it seems to fall one degree colder. Wherever I am I just hope it’s not too difficult to find my way out.
Turning around I hear Logan calling my name softly, like coaxing a bird out of its tree. “Marnie, Marnie.” Stepping towards me he reaches a hand out, “come here.”
Now here he goes calling me expecting me to walk over to him, like some dog coming towards their owner. But if I where ever a dog I would never come home, I’d venture out on my own and find freedom. But now I can’t just run and find refuge in the bushes, there is nowhere for me to hide! Walking towards him I see his hands reach out to grab my wrists, picking my foot up I slam it violently between his two legs.
Gasping on the ground Logan struggles to stand, but a few minutes are all that I need. Reaching my hand into Logan’s pocket of his jeans I find it, the key. Fleeing quickly to the door I unlock it in a hurry, before leaving the room I take one look behind me and I see Logan on his knees. His face is as red as a chili pepper and sweat pours down his neck. Not wanting to risk anymore time I lock the door quickly and shut it tightly behind me.
Stepping out into the empty hall, I find no one guarding the outside of my room just as I suspected. Bright lights are scattered on the ceiling, flickering like candles in the wind. Running down the hallway, I turn sharply and find myself in front of another door. The hinges are rusty and squeak as I push it open, inside I discover cabinets filled with food and a refrigerator. Opening the first cabinet I discover canned soups and boxes of macaroni, before reaching into grab any of the cans I hear the screech of the rusty door being opened and diving behind an empty desk that lies in the far corner, I pray it’s not Logan following me.
Peeking out, I see Reds searching through the cabinets. He must have gone and asked Sam what he should give me to eat, and then arrived here to grab some food. No one knows about me escaping yet, hopefully before they do discover I ditched. I’ll already be on my way, wherever that is I don’t know I haven’t planned that far ahead.
Shifting my position on the ground, so I can get a better look I accidently hit the chair of the desk and the chair swings and hits the wall. A loud bang is sounded through out the room; looking quickly back I see that Reds is now standing. His eyes are searching the room, looking for movement. Oh god I have to get out of here, there has to be someway out. Standing up out of my position I hope to blend in with the shadows, the lighting is scarce there is only one light which is positioned above the sink.
Staring at Reds I suddenly feel his eyes on me, closing my eyes tightly I imagine myself a bird flying away. Reds walks closer, I hear his heavy boots walking closer and closer towards me.
I hope with all of my heart that he has not seen me that he is just scouting the room for intruders but as much as I wish I know that he has seen me. I should run, I should hit him or kick him, I should do something but yet I can’t I’m immobile with dread. With the ever growing hate and fear of what Sam will do to me now, now that I’ve tried to run. He warned me, opening my eyes. Reds is staring at me, his eyes are soft and cautious reaching towards me he grabs one of my wrists tensing up waiting for me to struggle. Do something I scream to myself, but yet I can’t bring myself to do anything.
Reds seems gentle and kind, maybe he was forced to come here, or maybe he’s tricking me. Maybe he’s just being soft so I won’t struggle and fight, that’s it. Whichever one he truly is I have to believe that he’s not good, there’s not enough time for me to trust anyone here. Jerking my hand out of his, I strain to push past him but he places himself in front of me so I have no way of escaping. He is a good head taller than me and much stronger; I pick up my foot and once again kick him between his legs. But he sees me coming, he moves out of the way quickly, as he does this I see that my path is now open. Launching off my feet I run as fast as I possibly can, propelling myself out the door I find myself once again in the hall, no hesitation I remind myself. Running in the direction I haven’t been before. Reds is behind me now, dang he’s fast I can feel his ragged breathe on my back and, I can hear his heavy boots clomping up and down.
I know I shouldn’t look behind me but I must see if he is as close as I think he is. Turning my head I see Reds hand coming up right behind me, seconds before he grabs a fistful of my hair and I’m torn to the ground. Once he grabs my hair and takes a strong hold of it, I fall to the ground. The cement flooring smashes into my head and I can hear the smack of my skull hitting the solid hard flooring. My scream echoes throughout my mind and the halls.
My mind barely manages to see Reds pulling me up to my feet, his face is worried and apologetic I could even say I saw a tear in his eye. But I’m not sure if that’s what I truly see, after a few seconds my sight becomes black spotted, fuzzy even and for the second time in a matter of days I fall asleep with someone standing over me. Though he may not be smiling right now it doesn’t make one heck of a difference.
