Trance

It was clearing up…from dizzy,
To a touchable entity but yet was not still.
It was dancing to and fro.
Sometimes going out of frame.
Then as on a dark spot light came to fill,
To whiten the white hexagonal church,
How eerie it looked,
Lit by light from nowhere still.

I was running and nearing it-
It grew brighter and brighter,
Maturing from white to yellow
As it blushed it showed the white steps
Hosting thousand candle’s flame.
The dark courtyard infront lay deprived,
The chandelier echoed with the suddenly tolling bell-
“ O lady I am here! I am here to give thee name!”

The flames of the candle now grew cold,
And no doubt the soaring wind too froze,
Yet chillier was the solace in the voice
And colder still the pang that rose.
Up near the gong I perceived
A figure in a deep long dress,
A uniquely ordinary physique.
Even then I was enticed for the call
That was alarmingly expressive.

I was running...yes across the black haunting fence,
Now across the long corridors of the nun’s hostels,
Now across the terraces….
The pond so wide and slippery,
How come it couldn’t stop me?
No one was in front though,
Yet …yes I was chasing somebody.

Now I could see him,
In insurmountable vacant blue path,
Reluctant to wait he moved on,
While I continued chasing
Not thinking of the aftermath.

By now I have passed in quest,
All turns from locality
To religiosity, to the grave.
It grew sombre and smoky now.
Wearied of I sat below
Merging the gap within seen and unseen.
The worlds in which every layman has been!

Smoke…smoke, I got up.
I woke up from the trance and the pang.
Folding legs I sat looking through the window,
Suddenly as I turned the candle flame lighted my face…
It blushed…from distance the old country church bell rang.

Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power. Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts.
— Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind
