Chapter 7—His Voice
*Candy's point of view*
I couldn’t believe myself! First, I kill Sam. Then, I decide it would be good to tell him what I did, editing out the fact that he was the one I killed. And when he decides to be nice to me, I let him! This was absolutely unforgivable, damn it!
I had been running for a while now, and now that I stopped, I had no idea where I was.
The tears came back in a rush now, and I hated myself for falling apart again, which only made it worse.
“You okay?” I turned and found Sam standing behind me, hurt spelled out across his face plainly for me to see.
“I-I’m fine. I just…” I trailed off, unsure of myself for the millionth time since I arrived in the garden.
“It’s okay. I get it. Most people don’t expect a guy to start crying when he’s comforting you.”
“No! That’s not why! It’s just… I feel so terrible.”
Understanding filled his eyes. “Oh. Of course. I, uh…” The poor guy looked so embarrassed, it was almost adorable. Ugh. I couldn’t believe myself. I was dead, and I still couldn’t stop being superficial.
“You remind me of my sister,” he said, smiling.
This took me by surprise. “Is that a good thing?”
He chuckled. “Yeah, it’s a very good thing. You look a lot like her. That chocolate brown hair, the baby blue eyes, yeah, you look like my sister in a lot of ways.”
I frowned. My hair was naturally brown, but I had dyed purple streaks in it a month ago. They couldn’t be gone, could they?
A soft, yet powerful voice whispered into my ear, “You’re in your natural state now.”
I gasped. “Shit! I must be crazy.”
“You’re not. It’s me, God. We aren’t very close friends, but I would like to change that.” He was kind, just like they taught us at Sunday school all those years ago.
“What? Are you okay?” I had forgotten Sam was even there. I guess he couldn’t hear God. Just me. Whoops. Now he must really think I’m crazy.
“No, he doesn’t. Just explain. He will understand.”
I decided to trust God for the first time in my life. “Sam, before you decide that I’ve completely lost my mind, let me explain.” He nodded. “I’m hearing God, but not with my ears. It’s like there’s a speaker in my head.”
He smiled. “Yes, I understand.”
“Oh, good.”
“I will. Thank you.”
And that’s when I realized that he wasn’t even talking to me. He was talking to God, just like I was. We must really be connected.
“Candy?” He spoke directly to me now. “I have decided to guide you.”
“Thanks. But why?”
“God asked me to.”
“Oh. Okay then. So what’s first?”
“First, you go find Theresa. I’ll meet you back in the orange grove.”
I nodded, and he left. That’s when I remembered how lost I was.
“Left, second right, end of path, left, straight. She’s picking sunflowers.”
I smiled and followed His directions. She was exactly where He said she would be.
