---------------------------------
A glint of light was suddenly penetrating her eyelids, making her uncomfortable. She felt awkward, a little out of place and unconscious, or not so much since she was beginning to hear voices in the distance. Her head was still swirling and that made concentrating an impossible task. It might be hard but not impossible and she tried her best to concentrate on the voices she heard.
There was female voice, sweet and whispering to a doctor whose voice was a bit grave. Behind those voices was a male voice she recognized; a beautiful voice that made her start opening her eyes slightly. She felt weird, there was something in her hand and she didn’t like it; it reminded her of…
“Sally, love, can you listen to me?” She heard the voice ask her, stopping the flow of her memories. As she slowly opened her eyes, closing them several times before making it, she saw who was talking to her. It was her mother, with concern in her voice. It was weird how she felt and where she was. It was a white room, with one huge window in the left wall where the sunlight could barely get in. There was a sound, a strange beeping sound as if marking a heartbeat. And there was this man she knew very well in a white coat taking notes and checking the machines that were besides her.
It was then that she knew where the memories came from, and where this place reminded her. It wasn’t even a memory or some bad dream, it was reality, and she was at the hospital again, after three years.
“Sally, how are you? You’re at the hospital” he mother said to her not knowing that she already knew where she was. She didn’t want to let the tears out for she thought she might seem weak, but something inside of her told her to let them out. She ran her left hand in her right arm and felt the uncomfortable needles already inside penetrating her skin.
“Mom, where is Alex?” Sally asked suddenly seeing a strange image reminding her that she was at school this morning with Alex.
“He’s here sweetie and Melicia is here too, do you want to talk to them?” Her mother asked, but she couldn’t answer for her throat was closed as she attempted to fight back the tears and the desperate need to scream. So, all that came from her was a weak nod. She let out a sigh, relaxing as she did so and somehow thought about the truth that she had never told Alex or Melicia. It was hard to tell them that in such situation, when it almost certain that they alredy learned about that truth.
The minutes that passed since her mother left to look for Alex and Melicia had felt unbearably long and lonely. But deep inside of her she was pleases by that silence. But her mother eventually came in with them following her.
“They’re here sweetie; I’ll leave you alone so you can talk to them. I think there’s some explanation you need to do” her mother said to her before getting out of the room and closing the door behind her. And it was in that moment, when she saw Alex’s beautiful eyes stare at her deeply, that her tears could not hold back longer.
“I’m so sorry” Sally said to them, pausing to take a deep breath and try to stabilize her emotions. “I’m sorry I never told you. I just didn’t want to be different, I want to live like a normal girl and I didn’t want to lose you” She turned to Alex who was now sinking in the couch next to her bed with his head in his hands.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Melicia said with the usual shock in her voice, her green eyes popping open. “ You should have told me at least” She continued, walking to her and grabbing her hands.
“I’m so sorry”
“No Sally, you can’t just say I’m sorry. You had us worried sick” Mel cut her off.
Sally knew it, and had known it since she first met Melicia that day in the third grade when she had fallen downstairs and Melicia had stayed awake for hours until she woke up. It was incredible how a girl of only eight years old could do that sacrifice. And since then, Sally and Melicia had been best friends.
“I couldn’t just tell you I had-leukemia” That word was still impossible to say out loud. But with the spare time she had had three years ago in the hospital she had become better at it. It was still hard she had to admit, but now that everyone she loved knew, well, it was getting easier by the second, And that she appreciated.
“Sally I love you, you’re my best friend, I’ll always support you ok.”
She nodded, changing the tears for some tears of happiness. IN between sobs and tears happiness slowly came to her.
“But… I think you owe some explanations to someone else and in that dude, I can’t help you”
Sally laughed a little at the funny face Melicia always did when she was sad. But it was true; Alex hadn’t moved an inch, his head still in his hands. So she hugged Melicia tightly before her best friend departed out of the door.
And it was down to Alex and Sally. She was trembling, biting her lower lip, trying to focus on one thing to say to him but her mind was swirling too fast. And he was still seated, sobbing silently, not wanting to look at her for he was afraid; afraid of losing her and that being the image he last saw of her. But he forced himself to do it, taking a deep breath and pretending to be strong even when he was already shattered.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked her with a hoarse voice she had never before listened, a voice which had sorrowful tone.
“I didn’t want to lose you” She said in between sobs. Excuses, she thought. Even though she loved him, the only reason she hadn’t told him was because she felt ashamed. She always thought about how impossible it would have been if everyone knew and gossiped about them.
“That’s crap, Sally!” he said, in a much too biter tone for her to bear but she knew she deserved it. It scared her how he quickly got up and went to sit next to her in the bed.
It was then that she saw his blue eyes sore of crying. “You tell me every stupid thing that goes on in your life and you couldn’t tell me this?”
She flinched at his words; they felt like knives cutting her apart. He was right but what she felt could not be explained easily and it would have been hard to explain that to him. It was a new facet of him she had never seen, it was the despair obvious in him and the disappointment boiling in his eyes. And she was tongue tied; she couldn’t come up with something reasonable to say.
“Sally, talk to me” He pleaded softly, taking a deep breath and trying to calm himself.
“I-I-I’m sorry” she muttered, but all she got was to make is eyes burn even more .
“I’m sorry won’t make it now” He said in an incredibly soft tone as he approached her. He slowly walked towards her, looking at her with soft eyes; the ones that used to stare at her every time they kissed. But he didn’t feel the same; he felt a profound sadness, one that had already grown roots.
But when he touched her, she felt her impatience ease to the point where all she thought about was him and his deep blue eyes. His warm touch was all she needed in that moment.
“Sally” He said as one lonely tear ran down his alabaster white cheek. “I love you, don’t you know that?”
“I know you, Alex, I know, is just-“She tried to say it aloud but it was as impossible as thinking it. Telling him she was afraid was not easy for her. All that she could do was rub the back of her hand softly against his cheek, which was still wet from his tears. He shuddered, grabbing her hand and kissing it.
“Is just that I was afraid that you wouldn’t want to be with me, because I was sick”
“Sally, what the hell are you saying if you were sick I would come every day, I would never ever leave you, ok? Are you listening to me, Sally? I would never ever leave you” he said, placing his hands in her face and looking at her with determined eyes; with the expression that showed that irrevocable love that he had for her.
“I love you” she said quietly, not sure if she was fair in giving him high hopes when the days of her life were already in the countdown. But still, she leaned forward slowly, closing her eyes in the process. And he did the same, not taking his hands off her face but caressing it with care now. His lips carefully reached for hers, not kissing, but brushing them softly, tracing their contour, until little by little his lips were on hers completely. It was quiet and peaceful, she was experiencing what she thought was heaven; he made that, she let go of herself and let her body react to the touch of his lips.
He was just doing something he loved, feeling her lips and touching her soft alabaster white skin. It was hard to think when he was so engaged in kissing her, even though he really needed to do so. Even resisting the temptation of her there, beautiful and in the bed was too hard for him. And it was definitely not the time to give in to temptation.
The kiss was irresistible, to the point where she couldn’t hold it back and threaded her fingers in her face and pushed him closer. But he stopped her, letting go of her first.
“Sally, no” he said laughing, giving her a last kiss.
“Sorry, you are to inviting, stop that” she said finally giving out smile and slowly hitting his arm. But in that moment the door opened and a blonde girl with almond brown eyes came through the door with a small metallic box in her hands.
“Hey, You are…Sally right? Sally-Ann Rosencrans?” Sally nodded, looking at her with wide eyes “Sally Ann I guess I have to steal for a moment, so we can do the scans and blood tests. And the doctor wants to do some special scans too”
Sally shivered, retaining her tears once again as the nurse began accommodating her bed so it could be moved to the scan room. Her emotions were almost overflowing, needles and tests were almost forgotten now. But apparently it was time to bring them back from the dusty cellar of her mind. She didn’t want to bring them back, she didn’t even want to look at the needles but she was forced to do it and still look strong.
“I have to go” She said to Alex. ‘Cuz here I go again, she thought.
“I know, I’ll be here tomorrow. Melicia is still outside I think, I have to look for her” And he kissed her hand with a courtesy.
Very carefully, the nurse and two other men were moving her bed toward the scan room and she wondered why she couldn’t just walk.
“Because you were unconscious for almost two days honey, your blood pressure is too low and your oxygen rate is far below normal” the nurse had told her.
Two days, she exclaimed in her head. The hospital was the same; she didn’t even look at it, at the hallways for she had been there many times before. It was white, the walls were white, it had big windows in the left side of the hallways. After much arguing with herself about doing it or not, maybe just out of boredom, she ended up examining each detail of it as she reached for the room where she was going to be tested.
Why do I need to recall this later on?, she thought, grimacing a bit and pursing her lips.
“We’re here Anne” Anne, it had been years since she was last called Anne. But she didn’t want to see it. It felt like hours as the nurse slowly tried to get her in the scan room. Everything began to feel as in a slow motion movie until even behind her closed eyelids, the surrounding all turned black and strangely cold, almost too cold. And from the back of the room, she heard a male voice and the disturbing sounds of the monitors and scan machines that peeped to the beat of her weak heart .And the frail sound of the serum passing through the long thin tube that connected to her IV disturbed her the most. But the smell of alcohol and serum burned her nostril as she breathed them.
Again, for long, she thought as she opened her eyes and saw the black room with the machines.
“Are you ready?” the nurse asked, checking her IV first.
“Yes” she muttered, finally letting a tear roll.
