Prologue
The LA night lights looked fantastic. The Hollywood sign gleamed and I could make out a few stars in the inky night sky. My father stood beside me, together, we were gazing into the big city and night sky. His amazing blue eyes met mine, and he smiled that perfect straight smile. I loved my dad, and I wished that that moment could have paused, and my life could have stayed that way.
But that clanking sound had to come from the bottom of my balcony. I had to look down, and I had to feel that pain shooting into my eye. I screamed in pain and backed away, tripping over the balcony table and chairs.
"What the-" a knife ended my father's words. Then, a black clothed man appeared and pulled the knife from my father's arm, and the metal crashed into his throat, drawing blood, and then, the man ran the knife down my father's body. I screamed in terror as my father’s body split open and blood poured onto the balcony.
“You monster!” I cried, still holding my hand over my eye. I lunged for the man, removing the hand, a slight breeze penetrating the wound.
I tackled the man and the knife raked across my arm and up my shoulder. I lie there in pain, as I watched the man stare at me in horror. His eyes were black and cold, feeling very much like the father’s dead body.
“I’ll kill you,” I groaned with my teeth gritted.
I could see the man smirk with his black eyes. I began to crawl towards him, every movement filled with excruciating pain.
I was almost there…almost there…I nearly grabbed the black fabric but suddenly he jumped off the balcony, disappearing into the night. I heard the rustle of bushes as he climbed out and raced away. I let out a scream. I had let him get away.
“I’ll kill you!” I yelled into the night, hoping he would hear me. Everything was gone now, my father was gone…my mother and father were both dead…I was alone…all alone, and I knew I was going to die.
Someone must have found me, because I ended up in the hospital, with a black patch over my eye. The pain still ran through it, and I could only see half of the hospital room at a time. I was to be sent to my aunt Linda, and I knew what this meant. Leaving my precious home of L.A. to boring Boise, Idaho.
The fact tore my heart apart. I would be leaving the town where I had been born, the town where my parents had met…the balcony where my father had died, and the kitchen where my mother had her heart attack.
Boise. I didn’t like the sound of that. And trust me…I did not want to be surrounded by Potato Lovers. My heart thumped when Linda came in to get me out of the hospital, and told me to pack my belongings. I would leave my best friend, and that would be the end of it. I felt as if I would never see her again, and I knew it would definitely be a long time if I ever did.
I remember packing and watching Uncle Tommy drive away with my belongings in the back of the UHAUL truck. I remember the flight, and the fizzing soda that bubbled in my throat. Tears leaked from my eyes as I ordered the usual Dr. Pepper and Aunt Linda ordered Sprite. I began to choke on tears. My dad would have done the same.
The room was tan. I hated tan. I hated the smell of Linda’s always wet dog, Bing. I hated the slow internet service and the view of my new school right down the street. I hated Boise. I hated Ada County. I hated Idaho. I hated my whole life, I hated everything that had happened. I wish that I could rewind it…and could erase these Deep Wounds.
